News Update

Community Calendar for Friday, March 3rd, 2023

Peaine Township Clerk Carla Martin says she has received a resignation from Doug Tilly as Peaine Township Supervisor. In a notice issued yesterday afternoon she said the Peaine Board would convene a special meeting to consider acceptance of the resignation and discuss a process to fill the vacancy. The time and date of that meeting are yet to be set, but we will pass that along when we know.

The winter storm watches issued yesterday for most of downstate have now been upgraded to warnings.  The projected track of the storm has moved a bit southeast, which means the island will see little if any impact from it. But, it could be a real mess downstate  in communities that have just recovered from extended power outages from last week’s ice storm. Forecasters say eight to 10 inches is on the way for a path covering Kalamazoo, Lansing, Jackson, Flint and Lapeer. There be less snow as you head north, with six to eight inches in the thumb area and 2 to 3 inches in Muskegon.  Meanwhile the southeast part of the state including Detroit and Ann Arbor will see freezing rain along with some snow, but forecasters say it won’t be bad icing like last week.  Still, travel will be messy in the warning area starting midday today through Saturday.

Radar forecast for the storm..

Finally, here’s good news if you were thinking about setting up a fortune telling business in Bay City. Soon, you may be able to do it without a license. The city commission there is looking at getting rid of the ordinance that requires fortune telling licenses at their meeting on Monday.  Also on the way out are licensing requirements for sign hangers. The line to sign up for these new opportunities forms…well..nowhere, because you no longer will need a license.

Now, here’s a look at what’s happening on your island…

TRAFFIC:  None. But, let’s be careful out there.

ON THIS DAY in 1913 Washington DC’s main street, Pennsylvania Avenue, sees up to 8,000 women’s suffrage supporters seeking to redress gender inequality, including gaining the right to vote. The march will become a milestone in the history of women’s rights in the United States. Also on this date in 1991, At 12:30 AM, police in Los Angeles begin high-speed pursuit of a vehicle on the city’s Foothill Freeway. After the car is pulled over, what happens next to Rodney King will be caught on amateur video and enflame a city and a nation. On this day image

WORD OF THE DAY: Our Merriam Webster word of the day is accentuate (verb) [ak-SEN-shu-wayt], which means  “to make something more noticeable.” When you accentuate something you put an “accent,” or emphasis, on it. There’s no need to stress out if you don’t know the word’s history, though; its journey into the English language was very straightforward. It comes from Latin accentus, meaning “accent” (which itself comes in part from cantus, meaning “song”), and since the early 18th century, its meanings haven’t changed much. The word was initially used as a synonym of the verb accent to mean “to pronounce with greater stress or force,” which is a small leap from today’s meaning of “to make something more noticeable; to emphasize.” One excellent way to remember not only how to pronounce accentuate but also its etymological connection to song is the classic (and helpfully titled) tune “Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive,” by Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer, which has been performed by such luminaries as Dinah Washington, Sam Cooke, and Bing Crosby and the Andrews Sisters.

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Friday…

Here’s a thought for the day from Rodney King: “I tell myself time heals. It really does.”

On a lighter note: Who was the sweetest Knight at the Round Table? Sir Up.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Friday, March 3rd, 2023. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And, thanks for listening.
