The Health Center is reporting 16 new COVID-19 tests as of this morning with all of them back positive. That’s right. All positive. That jumps the total of week or less old positives to 27. Nothing new from the state is due out until this afternoon when they will release a hospital utilization update. Next new case update from state health officials is due next Wednesday afternoon. Last reports showed downward trends in all statewide numbers, so it appears the island is lagging the trend. Four of the five Republican candidates for their party’s nomination to run against Governor Whitmer this fall met for a debate at the Mackinac policy conference yesterday up on that other island. Tudor, Dixon, Ralph Rebrandt, Kevin Rinke and Garrett Soldano all seemed to have fairly similar, party-line goals—although their paths to some of those goals showed variation. Six of the initial field were not present for the date including Ryan Kelley who stayed away because of COVID-19 testing requirements for inside portions of the conference, although the debate was outside with no tests required. The others who were absent, including front runners Perry Johnson and James Craig, failed to make the ballot because of signature fraud issues on their qualifying petitions. Craig’s appeal of that call by the State Board of Canvassers was denied yesterday and Perry’s was the day before. Both say they will appeal to the Michigan Supreme Court. Graduation ceremonies are on deck tomorrow for B-I-C-S seniors McKenna Turner and Jered Robert. Thinks kick off with a parade from the Post Office down to the Public Beach and up to School followed by graduation itself at 1:00. That will be followed by a party at the golf course for both graduates and former B-I-C-S student Gage Anderson, who recently graduated in Tennessee. All are welcome to come up and help celebrate the success of these seniors. Come this fall, McKenna is headed to Notre Dame to study architecture, Jared is headed to Western Michigan to study physics and Gage is off to Tennessee Tech to study electrical engineering. All three earned scholarships. Congratulations to all of them as they head out to what’s next. |

TRAFFIC: No delays inbound or outbound to the airports but expect delays in town when the ferry arrives. It is full just about every day these days. And, new born critters are everywhere. So, let’s be careful out there. |

ON THIS DAY in 1967 Aretha Franklin hits No. 1, gets some R-E-S-P-E-C-T. She hits No. 1 on the ‘Billboard’ Hot 100 singles chart with her version of Otis Redding’s ‘Respect,’ turning the song into a women’s anthem. Decades later, Rolling Stone will rank her recording as one of the five greatest songs of all time. |

MERRIAM-WEBSTER WORD OF THE DAY: perfunctory (adjective) [per-FUNK-tuh-ree], which means something that is done without energy or enthusiasm, as a duty or out of habit. A perfunctory explanation of the origins of perfunctory would be this: it comes from Latin. Borrowed in the late 16th century, the word is specifically from the Late Latin perfunctorius, meaning “done in a careless or superficial manner.” Perfunctorius ultimately comes from two Latin sources, per-, meaning “through,” and fungi, meaning “to perform.” Fungi is also a source to such words as function, defunct, and fungible, but not to fungus; that word is also from Latin, but it is most likely a modification of the Greek word spongos, meaning “sponge.” |

Now, to wrap up for this for Beaver Island Friday… |
|
Here’s a thought for the day from Aretha Franklin: “We all require and want respect, man or woman, black or white. It’s our basic human right.” On a lighter note: Why did the dog cross the road. To get to the other raw-hide. |

Water Temps: 47 at White Shoal. Still a chilly 38 at the mid-lake buoy southwest of Gull Island. No other stations reporting. Those temps are cold enough to do you in pretty quickly if you wind up in the water with no way to get out. If you are out in a small craft, remember to dress for the water not the weather. |
