Community Calendar for Friday, August 3rd, 2018

Today is Friday, August 3rd, 2018. I’m Kevin Boyle, with today’s W-V-B-I Community Calendar.
It’s Friday, so let’s take a moment to remember everyone deployed-those who will be spending another weekend away from their family. Pray that they stay safe and come home safe.
Now, some news…
The St. James Township Board met for their regular monthly meeting Wednesday evening. Among other things, the board approved a plan for reviewing the possible acquisition of the Beaver Island Marina through a donation from the Woolham foundation. You can review that plan on the township website at S-T James T-W-P dot org. The board also looked at organizational documents for a committee to be formed with Peaine Township to look at improving broadband service on the island.
As baroque week comes to a close, the artists are practicing for the grand finale concerts. We’ve happened across some rehearsals. Some brass:

The music continues with Baroque on Fire this evening with Baroque on Fire at the school at 7:30. The full festival orchestra will be plain gin the gym. Now, you might not think the acoustics would be very good for that, but not so. Here’s festival music director Robert Nordling.

Also on Saturday, a couple of movies here at the BIC Center. DC Lego Aquaman at 3. Great fun for the kids, and parents, too. And, at 7, Lean on Pete at 7. It’s an award winning film for teens and up. Again, both of those are Saturday here at the BIC Center.
Saturday is the last day for the great Water|Ways exhibits over at Whiskey Point. Check them out in the Township hall and don’t miss C-M-U’s exhibits next door in their boathouse. They close at 3. Also, the Whiskey Point Lighthouse will be open from 11 to 1. Not sure, but that may be the last time for this summer.
You can find more information on all of these events and everything else we know about that’s happening on the island at calendar dot w-v-b-I dot net. If we’ve missed your event you can easily add it yourself by using the handy “Post Your Event” button in the upper right of the. Post it there. Hear it here. ON THIS DATE of August 3, 1958, the U.S. nuclear submarine Nautilus accomplishes the first undersea voyage to the geographic North Pole. The world’s first nuclear submarine, the Nautilus dived at Point Barrow, Alaska, and traveled nearly 1,000 miles under the Arctic ice cap to reach the top of the world. It then steamed on to Iceland, pioneering a new and shorter route from the Pacific to the Atlantic and Europe.
After a career spanning 25 years and almost 500,000 miles steamed, the Nautilus was decommissioned on March 3, 1980. It’s now on display at the Submarine Force Museum in Groton, Connecticut. You can read more about the Nautilus and Admiral Hyman Rickover, the admiral who oversaw her construction in Phyllis’s Facebook post for today.
Phyllis asks: DID YOU KNOW THAT It is illegal to hunt camels in the state of Arizona? WORD OF THE DAY: arctophile (AHRK-tuh-fahyl) which means a person who is very fond of and is usually a collector of teddy bears. Arctophile means just “bear loving, bear lover,” but in modern English specifically a lover of teddy bears, not grizzlies. The suffix -phile “lover of, enthusiast for” is completely naturalized in English, as in cinephile, audiophile. The element arcto- is complicated in its development, but it includes the Celtic artos, which becomes art in Middle Irish, and arth in Welsh, which means “bear man”. Arctophile entered English in the 20th century.
Birthdays: Dave Schwartzfisher today. Happy birthday to Dave. And if its your birthday and we missed you on our list, happy birthday to you as well.
Normally, we take time for StoryCorps on Fridays, but we have so much going on there just isn’t time today. We’ll catch up next week.
So, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Baroque on Beaver week Friday…
Here’s a thought for day from George Gershwin: “Life is a lot like jazz… it’s best when you improvise.”
On a lighter note:
Why couldn’t the string quartet find their composer?
He was Haydn.
SFX: (wah, wah, waaaaah)
That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for Friday, August 3rd, 2018.
I’m Kevin Boyle at W-V-B-I’ the Voice of Beaver Island wishing you a great day and asking you: why not make it the best day ever? And, thanks for listening.
