WVBI News

Today is Tuesday, February 23rd, 2016. I’m Greg Doig with today’s WVBI Community Calendar.

NEWS

Despite the Commission on Aging (COA) meeting which took place on January 19th and the activities listed in the January 28th Forum post, steps by COA have been taken to significantly decrease the availability of senior in-home services on Beaver Island. This weekend, the Beaver Island Christian Church, Holy Cross Church, and the Lighthouse Fellowship distributed form letters to be submitted to the Charlevoix County Board of Commissioners. This letter asks that assurances be made that all Charlevoix County residents be given equal and adequate COA services year round and that these senior services be restored. If you would like to obtain a copy of this letter in support of restoring Beaver Island’s senior services and submit to the Charlevoix County Board of Commissioners, the letter can be picked up at the Community Center, the library, or McDonough’s Market.

Thank you for your consideration and assistance in efforts to restore vital senior services. Without action, COA will deprive island elders of hard-fought services such as light housekeeping, laundry, medication reminders, nutritional meals, and personal care.

All you cold weather junkies….get out your ice fishing gear and head to Lake G. March 5th for an ice fishing tournament.

The public access will be opened for folks to get to the lake.

There will be a kids category (up to age 14) and an adult category.

Weigh in will be at the boat launch/public access.

There will be prizes for both kids and adults winning as largest fish in its class. (Walleye and Pike for the adults). Bass season is catch and immediate release only, so we won’t be fishing for them.

Other notes- you must have a license if you are 17 or older. No more than 3 lines in the water/person at a time.

If you have equipment/shanties etc. that you will lend out for kid use and others, please let us know.

We are asking you to sign up at the Hardware… there is no entrance fee, we just want to know how many to expect.

Watch for the weather updates too. If it looks bad (blizzard, rain, too warm, slushy ice…) we’ll have to cancel

In cooperation with the Media Lab at the Beaver Island Community School we are pleased to present new episodes of the Student Writer’s Almanac. Tune in on weekdays just after the news at 8:00 a.m., noon, 3:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m. and midnight to hear the latest literary work from students at the island’s schools. The rest of this week, we’ll present some works from past students at the school.

You’ll be pleased and amazed and the quality of work our island students produce. You can hear it all on WVBI on 100.1 on the island and worldwide at www.wvbi.net.

Things are moving along with the BICS FRC team. The students have worked hard to this point and have some more work ahead. You can follow their progress on a website that Kevin Boyle has put out there. The address is birobot.org

Take a look at the post “Join the BIROBOT Team as a sponsor”. There is as some cool stuff given to sponsors that donate.

If you are looking for information on when and where to see the latest episode of the Boonies you can find that and information on all island events on the new WVBI Community Calendar. Just head on over to the WVBI website and click on Calendar on the top menu. In addition to Boonies information, you’ll find entries for events all over the island all through the year, including:

+ Summer favorites like Museum Week, Baroque on Beaver, Art in the Harbor and more

+Events at the Beaver Island Community Center including the weekend movies (with full details), wellness events, community meetings and everything else happening at the BICC

And, we can make it easy for your events to show up in a nice calendar on your website, too, so you only have to post them once. Your website can show only your events or those plus other categories from the calendar that you choose. What a deal! Email us or call for details.

Oh, and where to find the Boonies? It’s on Tuesdays at 9:00 on the National Geographic Channel (DirectTV Channel 256, Dish Channel 186).

And, right now on WVBI you can enjoy some classical music with Exploring Music — an internationally syndicated radio program featuring classical music, with commentary and analysis by host Bill McGlaughlin. Did you know that the The Code of Hammurabi decreed that bartenders who watered down beer would be executed. The Code of Hammurabi is a well-preserved Babylonian law code of ancient Mesopotamia, dating back to about 1754 BC. It is one of the oldest deciphered writings of significant length in the world.

Word of the day: parapraxis (par-uh-PRAK-sis) which means a slip of the tongue or pen, forgetfulness, misplacement of objects, or other error thought to reveal unconscious wishes or attitudes. Parapraxis can be traced to the Greek word prâxis meaning “act, action.” The prefix para- is used in formation of loanwords from Greek and means “beyond, past, by.” By extension, para- is also used to designate objects or activities auxiliary to or derivative of that denoted by the base word.
