Community Calendar for February 17, 2016

WVBI News

Today is Wednesday, February 17th, 2016. I’m Greg Doig with today’s WVBI Community Calendar.

NEWS

Please join Mike Scripps and others at the Beaver Island Community Center Theatre on Wednesday, February 17th at 7 p.m. for a film about the power of prayer entitled ‘War Room’. Free popcorn will be provided by Mike and Shelly Scripps.

In cooperation with the Media Lab at the Beaver Island Community School we are pleased to present new episodes of the Student Writer’s Almanac. Tune in on weekdays just after the news at 8:00 a.m., noon, 3:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m. and midnight to hear the latest literary work from students at the island’s schools. Today, the ninth grade class will present their analysis and reviews of George Orwell’s dystopian novel 1984. The rest of this week, we’ll present some works from past students at the school.

You’ll be pleased and amazed and the quality of work our island students produce. You can hear it all on WVBI on 100.1 on the island and worldwide at www.wvbi.net.

Things are moving along with the BICS FRC team. The students have worked hard to this point and have some more work ahead. You can follow their progress on a website that Kevin Boyle has put out there. The address is birobot.org

Take a look at the post “Join the BIROBOT Team as a sponsor”. There is as some cool stuff given to sponsors that donate.

If you are looking for information on when and where to see the latest episode of the Boonies you can find that and information on all island events on the new WVBI Community Calendar. Just head on over to the WVBI website and click on Calendar on the top menu. In addition to Boonies information, you’ll find entries for events all over the island all through the year, including:

+ Summer favorites like Museum Week, Baroque on Beaver, Art in the Harbor and more

+Events at the Beaver Island Community Center including the weekend movies (with full details), wellness events, community meetings and everything else happening at the BICC

+Special meals from COA feasts, to AMVETS breakfasts to fundraising dinners

+Beaver Island Community School Events including sports, plays and robot competitions

+Island board meeting dates for the townships, school and library

+Events at the island’s churches, including Sunday services

+Beaver Island Wildlife Club activities

+Events off-island of special interest on the island like the Grand Rapids party Feb 27th and…the Boonies.

We’ve tried to include everything, but if we’ve missed your event you can easily add it yourself by using the handy “Post Your Event” button in the upper right of the calendar or by sending an email with the details to calendar@wvbi.net. And, we can make it easy for your events to show up in a nice calendar on your website, too, so you only have to post them once. Your website can show only your events or those plus other categories from the calendar that you choose. What a deal! Email us or call for details.

Oh, and where to find the Boonies? It’s on Tuesdays at 9:00 on the National Geographic Channel (DirectTV Channel 256, Dish Channel 186).

And, right now on WVBI you can enjoy some classical music with Exploring Music — an internationally syndicated radio program featuring classical music, with commentary and analysis by host Bill McGlaughlin. All on your own community radio station right here in the boonies–WVBI on FM 100.1 on the island and worldwide on www.wvbi.net.

Storyline

70-year-old widower Ben Whittaker has discovered that retirement isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Seizing an opportunity to get back in the game, he becomes a senior intern at an online fashion site, founded and run by Jules Ostin.

Originally set up at Paramount Pictures, The Intern was planned to feature Tina Fey and Michael Caine in the lead roles. When a budget could not be settled, Meyers decided to pre-package before going out to other studios and was able to start negotiations for both actors.[4] Handed over to Warner Bros., Fey was replaced by Reese Witherspoon as the attached star, though Witherspoon left the film on January 15, 2014, due to scheduling conflicts.[4] As of February 7, Anne Hathaway was in final talks to replace Witherspoon in the lead role.[5] Stephen Goldblatt was set as director of photography.[6] On June 23, Zack Pearlman joined the cast of the film.[7]

On this date of February 17, 1911 the First Electric Self Start was installed in a Cadillac By GM. Up till this time and all cars needed to be started by cranking a starting handle which was hard work and caused multiple minor injuries when the car backfired during the starting process.

Did you know that University of Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh played Screech’s cousin on a 1996 episode of Saved by the Bell: The New Class?

Word of the day: llutestring (LOOT-string) which means a glossy silk fabric. This fabric has nothing to do with a lute string. The word is a corruption of French lustrine, from Italian lustrino, from Latin lustrare (to make bright). Ultimately from the Indo-European root leuk- (light), which also gave us lunar, lunatic, light, lightning, lucid, illuminate, illustrate, translucent, lux, lynx, pellucid, lucubrate, limn, levin, and lea. Earliest documented use: 1661.
