BICS GRADUATION & CELEBRATIONS
Like Friday, 0ur lead story today is about commencement. All of Beaver Island’s 12th graders have officially graduated with graduation ceremonies completed at the Lighthouse School, attended by Trace Butler and Jordan Marsh, Interlochen Arts Academy attended by Ryan Boyle, Beaver Island School attended by Sarah Avery, Zac Bousquet and Emily Burton, and Liam Hodgson’s completion of his home schooling. A number of the kids are headed to college this fall including Sarah Avery who is headed to the University of Michigan, Ryan Boyle who is off to Adrian College, Emily Burton and Zac Bousquet who will be at Northwestern Michigan College in Ann Arbor and Liam, who is apparently still deciding where to go. Jordan Marsh plns to join Zac and Emily at Northwestern Michigan’s aviation program after taking a gap year.
Congratulations to all of them. The BICS graduation was here at the Community Center on Saturday where Sarah Avery gave the valedictorian address Adam Richards, the high school social studies teacher at BICS delivered the commencement address
You can hear Mr. Richard’s complete remarks this evening in a special WVBI Live at Five.
UPCOMING EVENTS
It looks like a busy week on the island.
School’s out for summer for BICS students, but not quite yet for teachers. They are at school today for a teacher work day. If you haven’t picked up your yearbook yet, have missing items or need to follow up on anything with the teaching staff—today would be a good day to get that done.
Speaking of the yearbook, the students in MS. Wiser’s Media class—who put the year book together—really did a nice job. For the first time in recent memory the book is hard-cover and, as usual, it has a lot of great pictures. If you’d like to get a copy, you can still order one. Just give the school office a call. AT $15, they are a bargain.
If you enjoy cooking and are looking for something fun to do for dinner this evening, you might want to attend Judy Meister’s annual Pampered Chef Workshop. Supper will be served. All you need to to is RSVP to Judy at 2963 and bring a 3 to 4 cup mason jar—or plan to buy one for a good price there. If you decide to go at the last minute with no RSVP, Judy says that’ll be fine, but please let her know in advance if you can. The vent is this evening at 5:30 at the Peaine Township Hall.
Also this evening is the Preservation Association of Beaver Island Summer Solstice Dinner here at the BIC Center. The PABI Board will prepare dinner for all those who’ve contributed to the operations of the Beaver Island Community Center and WVBI in the past year. It’s a summer kick off favorite. There are rumors that robots may be in attendance and, as always, the food will be awesome. So if you are a PABI contributor, please try to make it to the dinner and receive your just thanks for helping PABI fund and operate the Community Center and WVBI. Please RSVP if you are attending by giving Ann a call here t the center on 2022.
On Tuesday, the Beaver Island Rural Health Center silent auction kick’s off. You can stop by the health center to see what they have to offer. And,as is summer tradition, their new car raffle is underway. You can buy a ticket or three for the car raffle at the center and at various locations on the island including the Paradise Bay Coffee Shop, where your ticket will include a free lunch. Also on Tuesday at 2:00, the Beaver Island District Library is offering a Manga-Anime workshop with Dan McDonough. This is an event for kids and adults who want to learn how to draw anime style. Materials will be provided and it’s a free events.
On Wednesday, the Talking Threads Quilt Guild meets from 9:30 to noon at the Peaine Township hall. If you go to the library event on Tuesday, you can head over to the guild meeting and make an anime quilt on Wednesday. What a deal. Only on Beaver Island. Then, Wednesday evening you can head to Gregg Fellowship hall for some BINGO. Doors open at 6:15 and the first call is at 7:00.
On Thursday, another favorite island tradition spins up for the summer. It’s the first farmer’s market of the season at the Paradise Bay Coffee Shop from 9 to 11. That evening, you can hed to the Beaver Island Studio and Gallery for Wine & Paint Night. It’s a fun evening of painting for artists at all levels.
Then on Saturday the 25th, there’s a bevy of activities to consider. At 9:00 that morning the first CMU summer boat trip gets underway with field trip entitled Bottom Dwellers of Whiskey Point. Now, rumors to the contrary notwithstanding, this is not about people who spend their winter evening hours trolling the Beaver Island Forum to making snarky comments. Seriously, it’ll be a great event and is sure to sell out, so call the folks at CMU now if you want to attend.
Also on Saturday, you can head down to Tara’s Meadow at noon for a presentation on how Beaver’s can Save the World. You can hear from leading sustainability experts on a variety of topics including work being done to look at clever approaches taken by beavers.
Also at noon, you can stop by the library to learn about the island’s FIRST robotics team b-I-robot. You’ll get to see their world championship attending robot as well as other programming and robotics projects they’ve completed in the Beaver Island Community School’s first ever programming and robotics class. Interested in robotics or programming and want to take a class next year? They say this is the event to find out bout not only the high school program, but also FIRST programs for younger students including FIRST technology challenge and FIRST Lego Robotics League. Again, that’s at noon at the library on Saturday.
There’ll be no movies t the BIC this Saturday, but that’s because there is a great music event on stage Saturday evening. Awesome Distraction will be on the main stage at 8:00 Saturday evening. They are an up-north Michigan based band on the cusp of releasing their 4th CD. You’ll hear guitar, mandolin, banjo, ukulele, harmonica, and violin and along with some acapella pieces – with plenty of original music. You can get tickets at the BIC Center front desk or by calling 2022.
You can find out more about all of these events and lots of other events this week and in the weeks to come over at the WVBI/BIC Center Community Calendar. Just head to W-V-B-I dot net and click on Calendar.
TRAIL FUN
As part of Beaver Island’s trails initiative, the Human Services Commission and islanders are teaming up with Leadership Charlevoix and United Way to develop born learning trails for pre-schoolers. Each Born Learning Trail captures 10 fun outdoor games on engaging signs to help parents and caregivers create learning opportunities for young children. Signs will be installed at the Beaver Island Community School, library, and the Jewel Gillespie playground. The signs have been ordered and their anticipated delivery date is mid-July. Volunteers will be asked this summer to help erect signs and stencil age appropriate activities on the cement. If interested in volunteering, contact Larissa McGinnity (448-2125) or Pam Grassmick (448-2314).

Word of the day: zeitgeber (TSAHYT-gey-ber) which means an environmental cue, as the length of daylight, that helps to regulate the cycles of an organism’a biological clock. Zeitgeber is of German origin, translating literally as “time giver.” It entered English in the 1960s.
BIRTHDAYS
On our birthday calendar today:
If we’ve missed you and it’s your birthday today, all of us here at WVBI and the BIC Center wish you a happy one. And if we are missing your birthday, you can add it to the calendar by sending an email to birthdays at wvbi dot net.
TRAFFIC
As we mentioned, it was windy overnight and there are lots of limbs down outside of town. I had to pull a few good sized ones out of the way on west side drive to get in this morning. So be on the lookout for branches or bigger stuff in the road as it is going to keep on blowing all day.
Despite the wind, the WVBI traffic drone is plying the skies looking for backups, but we are still happily waiting for any delay to report. Drive times to both island airports are normal and thanks to our hard working Charlevoix County road crew, all of the roads are in great shape—smooth as Lake Michigan on a breezeless day. But, let’s be careful out there because summer events and activities are happening all over.
CLOSE
Finally, here’s a thought for you on this Monday as you survey the week ahead and the summer days to come:
“Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards.”
– Soren Kierkegaard:
So, to Lucas and all our Beaver Island graduates, we wish you the understanding of the past and the excitement of the great days to come.
That’s the WVBI Community Calendar for Monday June 20th, 2016. I’m Kevin Boyle.
