Federal aid to restore private forests damaged by last year’s ice storm has stopped flowing to Michigan. Interlochen Public Radio reports nationwide demand for the Emergency Forest Restoration Program exceeds available funding. About 600 Michigan landowners are in the application process after months of delays. The March 2025 storm damaged roughly three million acres of forest across 12 counties. The program reimburses eligible landowners for up to 75 percent of restoration costs. Congressman Jack Bergman is calling on Congress to replenish the funding.

Nearly 70 “No Kings” events are planned across Michigan Saturday, October 17, including gatherings in Petoskey and Marquette. Organizers say this round will emphasize nonpartisan voter participation ahead of the midterm election. Activities will vary by community, with some featuring speakers or costumes. Nothing appears for the Island.

On this date in 1975, The Jazz Singer premieres in New York, helping launch Hollywood’s talking-picture era. Al Jolson’s songs and brief spoken passages bring synchronized voices to a feature film, although much of the movie still uses silent-film storytelling. His famous line, “You ain’t heard nothing yet,” proves prophetic as the film’s success helps transform the movie business.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is regimen [REJ-uh-mun], a noun meaning a planned routine, especially one intended to maintain or improve your health. A daily walk, regular exercise and sensible meals might all be part of your regimen. The word traces back to Latin for “to direct” or “to steer.” For example: “Her fall fitness regimen includes a morning walk along Paradise Bay—even when the wind provides extra resistance.”

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Tuesday…

Here’s a thought for the day from Al Jolson: “I never wanted to be famous, but I always wanted to be great.”
