First some news…
The Beaver Island Rural Health Center is raising $1,845 to install safety bollards protecting two 2,000-gallon liquid propane tanks from nearby road traffic. This covers half the total project cost, and donations can be made through the Charlevoix County Community
Foundation’s “Pick a Project Grant Catalog” until November 15, 2026.
Michigan State Police are investigating a collision involving a pickup truck and a train in Hudson Township.
Troopers responded to the crash near the intersection of Borgstrom and Black River roads at approximately 9:35 a.m. Sept. 26.
A preliminary investigation found that the pickup’s driver disregarded the traffic control device at the railroad crossing and failed to yield to the train, resulting in the collision.
The driver, a 34-year-old Newberry man, and a juvenile passenger sustained injuries that were not life-threatening.
Police do not believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.

On this date in 1020, a Chicago
grand jury indicts eight members of the Chicago White Sox on charges of fixing the 1919 World Series. White Sox owner Charles Comiskey immediately suspends Chick Gandil, Buck Weaver, Happy Felsch, Swede Risberg, Fred McMullin, Eddie Cicotte, “Lefty” Williams
and
“Shoeless” Joe Jackson, who are notorious for their involvement in the “Black
Sox Scandal.”
At the time of the grand jury indictment, Chicago was finishing up a 96-win season. The White Sox eventually lost a heated pennant race to the Cleveland Indians, who went on to win the World Series.
