Community Calendar Report for Wednesday, March 25th, 2026.

First some news…

Michigan House Bill 4471 aims to address staffing shortages in sheriff’s and prosecutor’s offices by allowing retirees to return to work without forfeiting their pensions. The bill, which removes the 1,000-hour limit for retirees in 13 counties, could benefit those counties but may impact smaller agencies that currently hire retirees for full-time positions.

 

Service dogs are being denied access to businesses, particularly hotels and restaurants, despite being protected under the Americans With Disabilities Act. Paws With a Cause hosted a training in Grand Rapids to educate businesses on proper procedures for accommodating service dogs. The organization emphasizes that businesses can only legally ask two questions about a service dog and encourages awareness training to prevent discrimination.

 

Team 6098 BIROBOT heads to Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste Marie this week for their first competition event of 2026. The team travels Thursday, competes Friday and Saturday, and returns Sunday. Ticket sales for the 2026 Warblers on the Water events, May 22-25, are now open. The festival features new field trips to celebrate Great Lakes Islands biodiversity.

On this date in 1911 The Triangle Shirtwaist Company factory fire in 1911, which killed 146 workers, led to improved safety regulations for factory workers. The factory, owned by Blanck and Harris, had a history of fires and lacked proper safety measures.
