Community Calendar Report for Wednesday, September 10th, 2025

In Lansing, charges against Charlevoix resident John Haggard and 14 other’s accused of being “fake electors” were dismissed yesterday. Prosecutors said the group signed documents falsely claiming Donald Trump won. The defendants said they thought they were signing documents that would only be used if it was determined that now President Trump had won in 2020. District Judge Kristen Simmons ruled there was no criminal intent, saying the defendants appeared misled and believed they were documenting something important. Attorney General Dana Nessel called the decision disappointing, while supporters of the defendants blasted the case as political and called Nessel’s defeat epic.

Consumers Energy plans to sell its 13 aging hydropower dams in Michigan to Confluence Hydro, a subsidiary of Maryland-based Hull Street Energy, for just a dollar each. The company will buy back the electricity the dams generate at an undisclosed price. Consumers says the sale is the most cost-effective option for customers, since the dams produce just one percent of its power while losing $152 million a year. Federal and state regulators must still approve the deal, which could close in late 2026 or early 2027

The piping plover, a small shorebird with orange legs and a whistling call some of which make their summer home on the High Island spit, is making a comeback. The University of Michigan Biological Station reports a record 88 nesting pairs this year — up from just 12 to 17 in 1990. About 40 percent nest at Sleeping Bear Dunes and North Manitou Island, but they face threats from predators, people, and pets on beaches. A captive rearing center in Pellston, run by the Detroit Zoo with federal and university partners, incubates abandoned eggs and raises chicks until release. Conservationists say the recovery is a hopeful sign for both plovers and the Great Lakes shoreline.

Finally, a reminder for would-be hunters that a Hunter Safety Field Day is set for September 28th. Time is running out to complete the online course that is required to be part of the field day. Take it at Michigan.gov/DNR, then contact Levi Connor for field day signup. Both steps are required for first-time hunting licenses.

On this date in 1813, On this date in 1813, nine U.S. ships defeat six British vessels in the Battle of Lake Erie near Put-in-Bay, Ohio. Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry commands the flagship Lawrence, which is battered and disabled. He rows to the Niagara, breaks the British line, and forces Commodore Robert Heriot Barclay to surrender. Perry reports to General William Henry Harrison: “We have met the enemy and they are ours: two ships, two brigs, one schooner, and one sloop.” The victory secures the Northwest Territory, reopens supply lines, and lifts American morale in the War of 1812.Top of Form

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is griot (noun) [GREE-oh], a noun refers to any of a class of oral historians, musicians, and storytellers of western Africa whose performances include tribal histories and genealogies. Griot (GREE-oh) is borrowed from French. Such entertainers arealso called jeli (JEH-lee) or jali (JAH-lee) in Mande (MAHN-day), and gewel (geh-WELL) in Wolof (WOH-loff). Griots preserve genealogies and oral traditions, often playing instruments like the 21-string kora (KOH-rah) and the khalam (KHAH-lam), thought by some to be the banjo’s ancestor.

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Wednesday

Here’s a thought for the day from the Island’s own Archie Minor published in the New York Times: “I always say any town with more than one street is too big. And we’ve got one street.”

On a lighter note…

What did the guitar and banjo name their daughter?
