Community Calendar Report for Thursday, July 3rd, 2025

Up on Mackinac Island, the City Council has been blocked from freezing ferry ticket and parking rates. A federal judge has halted those efforts for the time being, siding with Shepler’s and the Mackinac Island Ferry Company in their lawsuit against the city. The preliminary injunction fo the courts keeps current rates in place during Mackinac Island’s busy summer season.

Around the state, Eagles are battling a growing outbreak of bird flu. So far this year, at least 18 eagles in the state have been confirmed with avian influenza. Experts say the virus has sharply reduced breeding pairs, dropping by about 40% after a major outbreak in 2022. Scientists warn more cases could be coming and stress the need to keep a close watch on Michigan’s eagle population.

Here on Beaver Island, the BIC Center is getting ready for their first big concert of the 2025 summer season.  The Orbitsons will be on stage Saturday evening.  We caught up with their lead man Vinnie Dombroski about their upcoming visit…

We’re really looking forward to our upcoming performance on Beaver Island and having been out to the island before to play the Beaver Island Music Festival, you know, with that much more excited to be out on the island again.
The Orbitsuns are a country band, but not a typical country band…
And so we’re really looking forward to the upcoming performance to play some music and really have a great time and to get people up on the dance floor dancing, because that’s what we do with the kings of the Redneck disco. And people shouldn’t be afraid of a redneck disco. It’s nothing but a good time. We’ll have a couple of cocktails and do nothing but play a bunch of dance music. And people will have nothing short of a ball. So we’re looking forward to that.
So, country, but not typical country. We asked Vinnie what folks will hear at the show.
You’re going to hear Tammy Wynette, Patsy Cline, Hank Williams, senior Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, all the great classic country performers. We just love to play those songs. And of course, there are many original compositions that we will play. You know we have released a video and a single for a song we wrote and recorded called Hey, Lonesome. And we have a brand-new tune, which is a great dance song. It does a 2 step dosido though and it’s called micro dosing dosido though and if you want to know what that’s about, all you gotta do is come to an Orbitsuns show and you’re going to see it. Nothing but a great dance party and a damn good time.
The show is this Saturday.  Tickets are at tickets dot bic center dot org.
We’re gonna have a great night of music. Bring your dancing shoes.

And we hope to see you there see you July 5th Saturday, 7:30.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is desultory (adjective) [DEH-sul-tor-ee], which describes something that lacks a plan or purpose, or that occurs without regularity. It can also describe something unconnected to a main subject, or something that is disappointing in progress, performance, or quality. The Latin adjective desultorius was used by the ancient Romans to describe a circus performer (called a desultor) whose trick was to leap from horse to horse without stopping. English speakers took the idea of the desultorius performer and coined the word desultory to describe that which figuratively “jumps” from one thing to another, without regularity, and showing no sign of a plan or purpose.
Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Thursday, July 3rd …
Here’s a thought for the day from Karl Benz: “The future belongs to those who believe in their dreams and have the courage to pursue them.”
On a lighter note…

What did the lightning say to the fireworks?

Hey! You stole my thunder.
