A surprise discovery near Sleeping Bear Dunes is changing how scientists fight invasive mussels in Lake Michigan. In 2015, researchers scraped mussels off a rocky reef—and nearly a decade later, they haven’t come back. That’s sparked new efforts to control zebra and quagga mussels using tarps, carbon dioxide, and even a 1,100-pound “mussel masher.” Scientist Harvey Bootsma says the invasive mussels wreak havoc on the lake’s food chain—but now, there’s a glimmer of hope they can be pushed back in key areas. Down in T-C, an airline that just added service at Cherry Capital Airport is facing national backlash—including protests at T-V-C—after signing a contract to fly deportation flights for ICE. Demonstrators say the deal violates human rights, while airport officials say they legally can’t reject the airline and those dismissing the protests ask why those who’ve entered the country unlawfully should be allowed to remain. The controversy could hurt East Coast service from T-V-C, but officials stress no deportation flights are planned from Traverse City. On the Island, Saturday was an important day with B-I-C-S seniors Alyssa Martin, Ava Palmer-Bousquet and Jason Selby collecting their High School diplomas in a well-attended ceremony at the school. Allyssa, as class valedictorian, delivered thoughtful remarks to the audience recalling her early days at school, including being left by the side of the road by her sister after she fell off her bike on one first day of school, but also reminding everyone to live in the moment and not wish time away. The class picked State Senator John Damoose as their commencement speaker. He spoke about how special it was that each graduate was one of three. He emphasized how unique that experience was and how unique the Island community is as well as a place where everyone depends on everybody, Noting the rancor he said he sees so much of in Lansing and D-C, he urged the graduates to capitalize on that experience –being one of three—to help build a better future for all. Afte the ceremony the community turned out in force for receptions for all three graduates. All three are headed off to college next fall. Alyssa will study business at the honors college at Grand Valley State University. Ava is headed to the U-P and Northern Michigan University where she will start undeclared, and Jason is going to Northern Michigan College in Traverse City to focus on uncrewed aerial systems and automotive technology. 2025 BICS grads Ava Palmer-Bousquet, Jason Selby and Alyssa. Martin (l-r). BICS graphic If you are a quilter of a textile artist, the Beaver Island Gallery would like to hear from you. They want to see if there is enough interest to run a third annual Quilt Show at the gallery sometime in August. They ask that you contact Linda McDonough at 231-330-4156 so they can make plans. Luke Milwrick was the Queen of Hearts draw winner Saturday evening. But, he didn’t pick the queen from the board, so the pot grew to over 95-hundred dollars. Luke took home $50 as a consolation prize. The next drawing is this coming Saturday. If you use DirecTV and need any service work done, they have a tech coming to the Island this week. On this day in 1881, the State of Michigan turns over ownership of the Soo Locks and canal to the United States. Passage is made free to all vessels. From the locks’ opening in 1855 until 1877, Michigan had collected first a four-cent, then a three-cent-per-ton toll, except from U.S. government ships. Passage today remains free of fees.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is eloquent (adjective) [EL-uh-kwunt]. An eloquent speaker or writer expresses ideas forcefully and fluently; an eloquent speech or piece of writing likewise expresses ideas in such a way. Eloquent can also describe something that is vividly or movingly expressive. Eloquent comes from the Latin verb loquī, meaning “to talk or speak.” Words are not alone in conveying emotion, and eloquent is also used to describe what we find vividly or movingly expressive. |

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Monday… |
|
Here’s a thought for the day from Roman Emperor Nero Claudius Ceaser who, on this day in the year 68 A.D., fearing overthrow, died from wounds he ordered inflicted on himself by his assistant: “Hidden talent counts for nothing.” |

On a lighter note… What’s the difference between a well-dressed man on a bicycle and a poorly dressed man on a unicycle? Attire. |
