First some news … More good news in the State’s latest COVID-19 data update. Average for new cases over the two-day reporting period was 1,053 and for deaths it was 13. That brings the seven-day running averages to 1,012 for new cases and 51 for deaths including reclassifications. There were 207 reclassified deaths in the report. Charlevoix had no new cases and no deaths during the reporting period. First time we’ve seen that since last fall. In our region, there were 51 new cases and six deaths total. The deaths were in Grand Traverse with three, Antrim with two and Kalkaska with one. Nothing new on COVID-19 data front from the Health Center. Their tally has no positive tests in the last two weeks and no tests pending. Our local health department has issued a press release noting that Charlevoix and Emmet Counties are now at low risk for COVID-19, which means that masking is no longer recommended except on public transportation, for those with special risks or in congregate communities and for those who have tested positive for the virus. Bridge Michigan is reporting today that two candidates who called for so-called ‘forensic audits’ into the 2020 election have scored upset wins in primaries for state House seats. Observers say wins by Robert “RJ” Regan in Kent County and Terence Mekoski in Macomb County illustrate former president Trump’s president’s hold on parts of the Republican party. The Entomological Society of America has changed the common name of the gypsy moth to spongy moth. The change is part of an effort to end the use of common insect names with derogatory terms or that contain wrong geographic references or that disregard what native communities call the insect. The new name reflects the spongy nature of the insect’s egg masses. Spongy moths first appeared in Michigan in the 1950s, but major outbreaks began to happen in the mid-1980s. There’s a webinar on dealing with the pests coming up. More information is in today’s script online. “New Name, Familiar Pest” Here’s a heads up if you have travel to the mainland planned for tomorrow. Storm systems that will cover the entire state are on the way. Mostly wet snow to the north, a mix of that with freezing rain and some rain mid-state and rain down south. And then snow in mid- and south-Michigan early next week. |

TRAFFIC: Our W-V-B-I virtual octocopter is out of the shop and once again flying high in the skies above the island and it spies…no traffic. None, nada, zip. Still, let’s be careful out there. |

ON THIS DAY in 1913 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington D-C sees up to 8,000 women’s suffrage supporters seeking to redress gender inequality, including gaining the right to vote. The march will become a milestone in the history of women’s rights in the United States. (Bing.com) |

WORD OF THE DAY: slough (verb) [SLUFF], spelled S-L-O-U-G-H, which means “to cast something off or to become shed or cast off.” It is often used in the phrase slough off meaning “to get rid of something objectionable or disadvantageous.” There are two verbs spelled slough in English, as well as two nouns, and both sets have different pronunciations. The first noun, referring to a swamp or a discouraged state of mind, is pronounced to rhyme with either blue or cow. Its related verb, which can mean “to plod through mud,” has the same pronunciation. The second noun, pronounced to rhyme with cuff, refers to the shed skin of a snake (as well as anything else that has been cast off). Its related verb describes the action of shedding or eliminating something, just like a snake sheds its skin. This slough comes from Middle English slughe and is related to slūch, a Middle High German word meaning “snakeskin.” (Merriam-Webster) |

Now, to wrap up for this for Beaver Island Thursday… |
|
Here’s a thought for the day from Susan B. Anthony: “The older I get, the greater power I seem to have to help the world; I am like a snowball – the further I am rolled the more I gain.” On a lighter note: What happens when bakers lose control of their mixers? Their funnel cake becomes a tornado. |
