Current Events Update for February 2, 2016

INTRO

Today is Tuesday, February 2nd, 2016.Welcome to Groundhog Day. I’m Greg Doig with today’s WVBI Community Calendar.

According to an old German legend, if a groundhog sees his shadow on Feb. 2, winter will last another six weeks. If not, spring comes early. (The pseudo-holiday originally started as badger day in European folklore, but German immigrants in Pennsylvania couldn’t find badgers, so they started using groundhogs.)

Did Punxsutawney Phil see his shadow?

No Shadow – Early Spring

Since 1887 only 17 times has he not seen his shadow

NEWS

Celebrate Beaver Island’s spectacular location and habitats as birds and birders migrate to the island for the 2016 Warblers on the Waters (WOW) events. An outstanding group of expert field guides and trips are scheduled for Memorial Day Weekend. Field trips, demonstrations, and presentations are free to registrants due to the generosity of island businesses and organizations. For more information visit the Beaver Island Birding Trial’s website:

http://www.beaverislandbirdingtrail.org

Registration for birding events has already been brisk, so please register ASAP.

A special thanks to the Charlevoix County Transit Authority who will assist with van transportation to take birders to sites.

Off island advertisement of the WOW event is occurring through Michigan Audubon, Pure Michigan, Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Events web blast, Little Traverse Conservancy, and the magazine, Blue.

Thank you to the Beaver Beacon, Chamber of Commerce, News on the Net, the Northern Islander, and WVBI-the Voice of Beaver Island for their assistance promoting the event.

Things are moving along with the BICS FRC team. The students have worked hard to this point and have some more work ahead. You can follow their progress on a website that Kevin Boyle has put out there. The address is birobot.org

Take a look at the post “Join the BIROBOT Team as a sponsor”. There is as some cool stuff given to sponsors that donate.

We’re pleased to let you know we have a spiffy new website for WVBI.

  • You can use it to listen online with a built-in station player that can provide you all sorts of information about the music we play. You’ll find song lyrics, album and artist information and more. To listen, just press the play button in the station player bar at the bottom of the page.

    • There’s also a Community Calendar with information about events all over Beaver Island. We’re trying to make it complete with entries for BICC sponsored events as well as other events sponsored by other island organizations — including BICS, BIHS, the Chamber and the BI Cultural Arts Society, among others. We’ll also have entries for island board meetings that are open to the public. Want to see your event on the calendar? Just send us an email at calendar@wvbi.net.

    • Keep up on what’s happening at WVBI with our news posts. You’ll find news about events on the station and at the BICC plus the text of our daily current events updates.

    • Want to know what’s on when at the station? There’s complete program schedule with detailed information about all of our programming.

    • Have an idea for a show or want to make a suggestion? Use the handy contact form.

But, enough reading about it. Dial it up and have a look at www.wvbi.net.

This event is sponsored by the Beaver Island Sports Boosters. Our goal is to purchase BICS athletes new Soccer uniforms, an outdoor timer for the Soccer games, Platform for our Volleyball Refs, and new mats for the gym. All donations will go directly to these items for our Beaver Island Community School Sports Program.

Word of the day: aeromancy (AIR-uh-man-see) which means the prediction of future events from observation of weather conditions. Aeromancy entered English in the mid-1300s. The combining form aero- means “air,” and the combining form -mancy means “divination” of the kind specified by the initial element.

let’s be careful out there. Especially in the school zone.

Outro

To Lucas and all out listeners, I’d like to say that the thing I like about Groundhog’s day is not the possible prediction of an early spring, but the fact that I get to see a groundhog on TV.

That’s the WVBI Community Calendar for Tuesday, February 2nd. I’m Greg Doig at WVBI – the Voice of Beaver Island.
