Today is Monday, January 25th, 2016. I’m Greg Doig with today’s WVBI Community Calendar.
NEWS
We would like to thank Ron Wojan for building an equipment box to store some of our transmitter gear. This will help protect the equipment and is greatly appreciated.
Things are moving along with the BICS FRC team. The students have worked hard to this point and have some more work ahead. You can follow their progress on a website that Kevin Boyle has put out there. The address is birobot.org
Take a look at the post “Join the BIROBOT Team as a sponsor”. There is as some cool stuff given to sponsors that donate.
We’re pleased to let you know we have a spiffy new website for WVBI.
• You can use it to listen online with a built-in station player that can provide you all sorts of information about the music we play. You’ll find song lyrics, album and artist information and more. To listen, just press the play button in the station player bar at the bottom of the page.
• There’s also a Community Calendar with information about events all over Beaver Island. We’re trying to make it complete with entries for BICC sponsored events as well as other events sponsored by other island organizations — including BICS, BIHS, the Chamber and the BI Cultural Arts Society, among others. We’ll also have entries for island board meetings that are open to the public. Want to see your event on the calendar? Just send us an email at calendar@wvbi.net.
• Keep up on what’s happening at WVBI with our news posts. You’ll find news about events on the station and at the BICC plus the text of our daily current events updates.
• Want to know what’s on when at the station? There’s complete program schedule with detailed information about all of our programming.
• Have an idea for a show or want to make a suggestion? Use the handy contact form.
But, enough reading about it. Dial it up and have a look at www.wvbi.net.
Mark your calendar! Join us February 26th for the 2nd Annual Alumni Basketball Tournament and Chili/Soup Cook Off
If you would like to join a team or sign up to enter your most awesome Chili or Soup call Carol @ 231-838-2883
This event is sponsored by the Beaver Island Sports Boosters. Our goal is to purchase BICS athletes new Soccer uniforms, an outdoor timer for the Soccer games, Platform for our Volleyball Refs, and new mats for the gym. All donations will go directly to these items for our Beaver Island Community School Sports Program.
Speaking of sports – The Islanders Basketball teams played hard but went away without a win at Ojibwe this weekend. They play at home this weekend versus Mackinac

Wildlife News
The Wildlife Club is asking for volunteers for a couple of upcoming projects:
Feb 1-7: Turkey survey. We need the folks who have turkeys to make a count this week and let us know how many birds you see regularly. Also any stray flocks not regularly seen, should be counted as well. Report all numbers and locations here or to Jacque at jacquel@tds.net
Mid-July to end of Sept.: Deer Driving survey. We are looking for more people to regularly drive a route (at least once a week) and count deer seen (bucks, does, fawns). This survey helps us to determine the size of the herd, locations, etc. If you are interested contact Phil Wyckoff 448-2874.. A gas stipend is given for the volunteers.
There are some diseases running about the island animals. Distemper was confirmed in a coyote near town last fall. Since then numbers of coyote seem to be down and the disease is the suspected culprit.
Avian Pox is affecting turkeys. This is highly contagious and anyone seeing an affected bird should contact Mark LaFreniere. It presents as a lot of little “wart” like knobs on the head. Meat is still safe to eat.
Snowshoe hare: One hare was shot loaded with tapeworm cysts- looks like lima beans. Meat is safe to eat if cooked well.
Youth involvement: the club is looking to encourage youth (5-25) to get involved with the club projects, as well as to get out hunting and fishing. Anyone wishing to mentor a youth who is interested in hunting or fishing, contact Jacque. Also, any youth who is interested, contact Jacque.
