The intent of the workshop is to increase the capacity of Beaver Island residents to carry out invasive species ID and management along with educating other stake holders in preventing the spread of invasives to the archipelago.

Presentations and field trips are geared for property owners who wish to identify and control invasive species in the fields, forests, or yards.

From Tom Clements, CAKE Coordinator  and Pam Grassmick

Speaking of our island plants, this comes to us from Pam Grassmick –

While driving, your eyes are needed to protect Showy Ladyslippers along the island’s roadways. I encourage people to be on the lookout for those who would remove our island’s orchids and report to our deputy (448-2700) or the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (989-732-3541). These plants are a legally protected species and are on Michigan’s Threatened Species List. While they are very beautiful, they require extremely specific growing conditions to grow. According to experts, the first year it may only grow as big as a pencil point, taking 14 to 17 years before its first bloom. Many visitors and residents have stopped to take photos and now unfortunately, the orchids are disappearing. Please do not remove orchids from their habitat. Thank you all for your assistance in preserving our natural heritage.

Word of the day: supererogatory (soo-per-uh-ROG-uh-tawr-ee) which means going beyond the requirements of duty. Supererogatory stems from the Medieval Latin superērogātōrius, with the root word ērogāre meaning “to pay out.” It entered English in the late 1500s.

Traffic

Still no delays to report other than the 2 deer crossings I passed on East Side and McCauley Road this morning

But,

Hey, Let’s be careful out there. Especially in the school zone.

To Lucas and all our listeners J.J. Reynolds once wrote, “Don’t permit yourself to show temper. Always remember that if you are right you can afford to keep your temper, and if you are wrong you cannot afford to lose it.” So, let’s all stay calm.
