The national landslide for Democrats was duplicated on the Island with Islanders preferring Dems across the board. The only places where the Island deviated from mainland results were for U-S rep for the first district, where Republican Jack Bergman won, and for the State Senate and House where Republicans John Damoose and Parker Fairbairn, respectively, won reelection.

The Island mirrored state-wide results on ballot proposals, voting against a proposal to call a state constitutional convention, but for a proposal that will limit spending by certain utility companies on election advertising. Saint James voters had five millage proposals to consider. They all passed, including funding for the Health Center that included a renewal and an increase. The renewal proposal passed with almost 81 percent of the vote. The increase passed by almost 63 percent.

There are summaries of the Island and state-wide results in today’s script online along with a link to download detailed results.

If you are headed downstate to hunt, a new D-N-R map might be of interest. It shows township-level reports of suspected E-H-D in deer. The midge-spread virus can sharply reduce local herds, affecting hunting prospects and decisions about taking does. It’s different from chronic wasting disease. You can see it in today’s script online where you’ll also find a link to more info from the D-N-R.

On this date in 1922, Egyptian workers on archaeologist Howard
Carter’s team uncovered a stone step in the Valley of the Kings. It led to the tomb of Tutankhamun [too-tahn-KAH-mun]—better known as King Tut. Carter would get his first look inside the tomb’s antechamber on November 26, beginning one of archaeology’s most
celebrated discoveries. Today marks 104 years since that first step was found.

Our word of the day is fulsome [FULL-sum], an adjective meaning generous or abundant in amount or spirit. For example: “Island residents offered fulsome praise for the volunteers who made the event possible.” There’s a wrinkle: fulsome can also describe praise so excessive that it sounds insincere. Context makes the difference. Its original meaning, dating to the 1300s, was simply abundant.
