First, some news…
The Boyne Area Free Clinic and Good Neighbors Food Pantry are raising over $500,000 to renovate their shared Charlevoix County building. Improvements include a new roof, siding, windows, doors, parking, and accessibility upgrades. The organizations serve 1,200
patients annually and 65 households weekly. A fundraising dinner is scheduled for October 7, from 4–7 p.m. at Veterans Park.
A threatening song named Gaylord High School students and referenced school shootings, prompting fear among families. Authorities deemed the threat not credible but are still investigating; the prosecutor will decide whether charges are warranted. Parents are
seeking clearer answers and stronger safety assurances from the district.
Michigan lawmakers are nearing bipartisan passage of stricter dam-safety laws prompted by the 2020 Edenville and Sanford dam failures. The legislation requires regular state inspections and licensing reviews, stronger emergency plans, improved state-federal
coordination, and a fund for repairs. The Senate may vote this week, and Gov. Whitmer is expected to sign it.

TRAFFIC: No delays inbound or outbound to the airports. The Island Beltway is running smoothly. There are no bridge delays. But, it is busy in town when the ferries arrive and there are lots of folks out hiking and biking. So, let’s be careful out there.

On this date in 1982, the first three of seven eventual victims died after consuming Extra-Strength Tylenol capsules that had been laced with potassium cyanide. The deaths occurred in the Chicago area, beginning with 12-year-old Mary Kellerman and followed
by Adam Janus and two of his relatives who took pills from the same bottle while grieving his death.
The incident led to a nationwide panic, the recall of 31 million bottles of Tylenol, and a permanent shift in consumer packaging. Although the perpetrator was never caught, the crisis prompted Johnson & Johnson to pioneer tamper-evident packaging, which soon
became the industry standard for over-the-counter medications.
