Charlevoix County’s Commission on Aging is eliminating its Beaver Island site coordinator position. Island services will now be handled from Charlevoix, with COA staff visiting Beaver Island once a month. Officials say services won’t be reduced and that meal vouchers can be either picked up during their monthly visits or ordered remotely. The announcement drew mixed reaction online, with some welcoming the change, but most questioning whether monthly visits can meet the unique needs of Island seniors and expressing concern about losing regular, in-person assistance. #Seniors #CountyServices
A decades-old plume of industrial contamination beneath Antrim County continues to expand. The TCE plume, originating from a former Mancelona factory, now stretches nearly seven miles and has contaminated more than 500 drinking-water wells. State officials say they’re seeking funding to extend municipal water service ahead of the slowly moving plume. #Environment

Residents along Little Traverse Lake in Leelanau County say they know the cause of repeated flooding. They blame the beavers and their dams. They say about 20 properties are regularly affected as dams along Shalda Creek slow drainage into Lake Michigan. Residents want Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore to again allow dams to be removed before flooding occurs. Park officials say they’re developing guidelines for when intervention may be necessary. #Enmvironment
The Beaver Island Rural Health Center is looking for a full-time certified—or aspiring—medical assistant. The position includes benefits. Applications, including a letter, resume and three professional references, will be accepted through Friday at 5 p.m. or until the position is filled.
Down in Detroit, Comerica Park is getting a new name. The Detroit Tigers announced the 26-year-old ballpark will become Fifth Third Park, following Fifth Third Bank’s acquisition of Comerica. The new name takes effect next season. #Sports
The Queen of Hearts is still hiding at the Elks. Jordan Kilcherman won Saturday’s draw, but he picked the ten of diamonds. He took home a $100 consolation prize. The jackpot is now $16,430.

C-O-A has COA Cardio Drumming at 10:00 and Art Therapy at 11:00 at Peaine Township Hall. Also, at 10:00, Babes & Toddlers mix it up at the library. Tuesday evening, it’s trivia time at the BIC Center. Let’s Get Quizzical starts at 6:00. Sign your team up at tickets dot bic center dot org. And, at 8:05m P-M, the sun will pass above the Earth’s equator marking the Fall Equinox.

Wednesday, there’s Summer Restorative Yoga at 9:00 and Summer Therapeutic Chair Yoga at 11:00, and at 1:00 there is Afternoon Bingo all of those at the BIC Center up in the Hangout. At 3:30, the Lego Club is on at the library. At 4:00 the Amik Cultural Preservation Center will be open. And evening Pickleball remains on the calendar. That starts at 7:00 on the outdoor courts at Peaine Township Park.
Thursday, there’s Pickleball at Peaine Township Park at 9:00. There’s COA Cardio Drumming at 10:00 and Art Therapy at 11:00, both at Peaine Township Hall. There’s Women’s Bible Study at 10:00 a.m. at the BI Christian Church and at 10:30, there’s Senior Tai Chi at the BIC Center. The Weekly Bocce Ball roll is on at 4:00 on the courts at the Peaine Township Park.
Friday, there’s Senior and Vets Coffee and Donuts from 8:30 to 10:30 in the Welcome Center at the BIC Center. At 9:00 A-M Pickleball Outdoors on the Peaine Township courts. Back at the BIC Center at 9:30, there’s Chair Strength Training up in the Hangout. Also, Friday evening at B-I-C-S, the Islander volleyball and soccer squads take on Mackinac Island in games starting at 5:00.

Saturday, the Islanders take on the Lakers again in volleyball and soccer matches at school. The Artisan’s Market is on at the Point starting at 10:00. Saturday movies are back at the BIC Center. The 3:00 show is Toy Story 5. Woody, Buzz and the gang take on a electronic tablet in the latest from Pixar. It’s rated PG. Then at 6:00, It’s Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender. Avatar Aang learns of an ancient power that could save his culture from extinction. With the help of his friends, he embarks on a global quest to find it before it falls into the wrong hands. It’s rated PG-13. Saturday nights are Prime Rib Night at the Shamrock. And there’s Pickleball outside starting at 7:00 on the township courts.
[On the radio, tune in for Country Classics at 5:00 Saturday evening with host Sheri Timsak. At 7:00, take a trip back to the best of the 80s and 90s with the Mix Tape show (that’s a 120-minute TDK cassette tape for those in the know) hosted by WVBI’s Adam Pettigrew. Mark Beltaire takes over at 9:00 with Rockin’ the Boat and continues at 10:00 with the Blues Cruise. Cousin Dan wraps up the evening with the Too Good Radio Show starting at 11:00.]

On this date in 1862, President Abraham Lincoln issues the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, five days after the Battle of Antietam. Lincoln declares that enslaved people in states still rebelling against the Union on January 1st will be declared free. The order does not immediately end slavery and does not apply to loyal border states, but it transforms the Civil War by making emancipation an explicit Union war aim. One hundred days later, Lincoln issues the final Emancipation Proclamation.

Our Merriam-Webster’s Word of the Day is nemesis [NEM-uh-siss], a noun meaning a formidable foe or an opponent who is especially difficult to defeat. As a proper name, Nemesis is the Greek goddess of vengeance, who was believed to reward noble acts and punish wrongdoing. The English word comes through Latin from the similarly pronounced Greek nemesis [NEH-meh-sis], meaning roughly “retribution” or “indignation.” In English, a nemesis originally referred to someone who delivered deserved punishment, but over time the word broadened to mean a persistent rival or enemy. |
