M-Live has a troubling story from Cadillac. They report that a Wexford County couple is facing eight felony charges in the killing of 22-year-old Rebecca Park and her unborn child. Prosecutors say Cortney and Bradly Bartholomew lured Park to their home, abducted her, and took her into the Manistee National Forest, where they stabbed her and cut her 28-week-old fetus from her womb. Both are charged with premeditated murder, torture, and unlawful imprisonment, and face mandatory life sentences if convicted. Supporters of the victim packed the courtroom as the graphic details were read. Investigators say the motive for the attack remains unclear. Northern Michigan’s homelessness response system could lose more than two-thirds of its federal funding under a controversial new HUD policy. The Northwest Michigan Coalition to End Homelessness told the Traverse Ticker that the change would cut guaranteed funding from about $1.4 million to less than $500,000 — a blow they call “catastrophic.” The Ticket says the new rules shift priorities away from permanent housing and toward substance-use treatment, limiting how much funding can support long-term housing. Michigan’s attorney general and 20 other states are now suing HUD, arguing the policy violates federal law. A victim of July’s mass stabbing at the Traverse City Walmart is suing the company. Interlochen Public radio says Aaron Boudot, who was stabbed while protecting his wife and children, alleges Walmart failed to follow its own security policies as the attacker wandered the store for more than 30 minutes. His family members are co-plaintiffs. The suspect, Bradford Gille, is also named in the suit. Walmart says safety is a top priority and it will respond in court. Island son and musician Michael Moore has just released a new tune entitled Safe Travels that he began writing shortly after Rory Connagham passed away this summer. We’ve added it to our collection of Islander music played here on W-V-B-I and there’s a link to his post of it on You Tube in today’s script. It’s a special tribute to a friend that will ring true to anyone who spent time growing up on or enjoying the Island. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=juNXF8nQnls With Christmas fast approaching, you might be thinking about holiday shopping. TRAFFIC: The W-V-B-I virtual octo-copter reports…no delays inbound or outbound to the airports. The Island Beltway is running smoothly and there are no bridge delays. But, the roads are super slick with another fresh coat of snow so, let’s be careful out there, especially in the school zone. |

On this date in 1992…the first text message is sent. Vodafone’s Richard Jarvis looks down at his phone during an office holiday party and sees a simple greeting: “Merry Christmas.” The moment marks the quiet beginning of S-M-S or short message service, a tool that will transform, for better and worse, how we communicate.
Rumor is these people are texting each other. Image from picryl.com |

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is alchemy (noun) [AL-kuh-mee]. It’s a noun meaning a power or process that transforms something in a mysterious or impressive way. The word comes from the medieval practice of trying to turn base metals into gold, cure all diseases, or even extend life. Those early experiments, stretching from Egypt to China to Europe, eventually helped inspire modern chemistry. Alchemy entered English in the 1400s, and by the 1500s it was already being used figuratively—much like we use it today. |

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Wednesday… |

Here’s a thought for the day from singer Andy Williams, who was born on this day in 1927: “Music has the power to heal, to bring people together, and to change the world.” |

On a lighter note… What type of music do elves like best? Wrap. |
