Morther Nature is serving up a gnarly dish for your Thanksgiving…especially if it includes travel. All over Northwest Michigan, the National Weather Service warns of a sharp shift tonight: rain is expected to turn into snow, bringing a Winter Storm Warning for much of the northwest Lower Peninsula.
Snowfall totals of 4 to 8 inches are likely, with strong winds gusting up to 50 mph. That combination could lead to white-out conditions and hazardous roads — especially late tonight into Thursday morning. If you plan to travel for Thanksgiving and need to get off the Island, best not to delay. If you are already on the mainland, get going before the snow starts this afternoon or evening.
Farther north, forecasters say the National Weather Service Marquette is warning of full blizzard conditions across the western and Lake Superior shoreline counties of the Upper Peninsula. Snowfall could reach three to four feet in some areas by Thursday night, with wind gusts over 40 miles an hour dropping visibility to near zero. Officials say travel may become “very difficult to impossible” and should be limited to emergencies. Gale-force winds on Lake Superior could also bring 15- to 20-foot waves and minor lakeshore flooding.

Meantime, Bridge Michigan says Thanksgiving brings food and family — and a spike in preventable injuries. Doctors say ER visits jump from cuts and burns in the kitchen, alcohol-related mishaps, and even “holiday heart,” an irregular rhythm triggered by heavy drinking. Fire officials warn that cooking fires peak on Thanksgiving, especially from unsafe turkey frying. Their advice: stay present in the kitchen, use caution with knives and hot oil, and don’t overdo it on Wednesday night. And if you’re experiencing severe pain, trouble breathing, or chest symptoms, head to the ER.

On this day in 1942, Rick’s Café Américain opened its doors to the world as the film Casablanca premiered. Few expected it to make a splash, despite stars Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. But when it went into wide release the following January, its characters, its theme song, and its unforgettable lines turned Casablanca into one of the most iconic films in movie history.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is unabashed (adjective) [un-uh-BASHT] meaning not embarrassed or ashamed to show your feelings or opinions. Its root verb, abash, means to shake someone’s composure. If you’re unabashed, you make no apologies; if you’re abashed, your confidence has taken a hit. Merriam Webster says English has used abashed since the 1300s, and unabashed since the 1400s.
