Community Calendar Report for Thursday, November 20th, 20

Plans for a data center in Kalkaska have been scrapped. Interlochen Public Radio reports that developer Matt Rine of Rocklocker held public meetings this week with the village’s downtown development authority, but residents voiced strong concerns about water impacts, noise, and other issues. State lawmakers also pushed back. A third meeting set for Thursday was canceled, and Rine announced he’s ending the project, saying his group listened to community input and believes decisions about the future must be made together.

The News Review reports that Northwest Michigan Habitat for Humanity is lending a hand to families facing food insecurity. Volunteers spent an afternoon at the Manna Food Project in Harbor Springs packing 214 Thanksgiving boxes for local pantries. Habitat also announced a $7,500 donation to food banks in Charlevoix, Emmet, and Cheboygan counties — a gift made possible by a donor bequest. Leaders say housing and hunger often go hand-in-hand, and the support comes as food banks see rising demand. More information is at northwestmihabitat.org.

Down on the old Mission Peninsula, a local citizens group is wading into efforts to settle the zoning dispute between the township and wineries there that resulted in a 50 million-dollar award to the wineries. Settlement between the parties are happening behind closed doors. The group Protect the Peninsula opposes that secrecy and has released its own proposed terms, arguing zoning can’t be set by confidential deal. Township leaders say any settlement must be agreed to by all parties, even as appeals continue in court. So far neither side has engaged with the citizens group.

The Leapfrog Group has released its latest Hospital Safety Grades, and several Northwest Michigan hospitals are standing out — for better and for worse. McLaren Northern Michigan in Petoskey earned a top A for patient safety, reflecting strong performance in preventing medical errors, injuries, and infections. Munson Healthcare Otsego Memorial Hospital in Gaylord also received an A. In Traverse City, Munson Medical Center came in with a B grade in the most recent report. Statewide, only 17 hospitals earned an A this cycle — the lowest number Michigan has seen — placing the state in the bottom tier nationally for patient-safety performance.

On this day in 1945 Judges from the US, Great Britain, France, and the Soviet Union preside over the opening of military tribunals in Nuremburg  to try Nazi officials for crimes against humanity, among other charges. Twelve Nazi leaders will be sentenced to death. Islander Donald Cole, then in the Army having traveled to Europe without a passport, serves as a messenger bringing information to and from the tribunal.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is gauche (adjective) [GOHSH], which describes someone or something having or showing a lack of awareness about the proper way to behave. When describing a person or a behavior, it can mean socially awkward or tactless; for an object, crudely made or done. The word comes from the French for “left,” reflecting old ideas linking left-handedness with clumsiness. That contrast survives in English too: awkward comes from a Middle English word meaning “turned the wrong way,” while adroit and dexterity trace back to words meaning “right” or “on the right side.”
Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Thursday…
Here’s a thought for the day from Richard Dawson who was born on this day in 1932: “Be nice to each other. You can make a whole day a different day for everybody.”
On a lighter note…with Thanksgiving just a week away, it’s time for turkey jokes…
Why did the cranberry turn red? Because it saw the turkey dressing! Want to hear your joke on the air? If you have a good one, send it to programming at w-v-b-I dot net…
That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar Report for this Beaver Island Thursday, November 20th, 2025. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios Wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And thanks for listening.
