Community Calendar Report For Friday, September 19, 2025

Community Calendar Report for Friday, September 19th, 2025.

First, some news…

Financially vulnerable residents of Beaver Island can get help with medical costs through the Rural Health Center’s Good Samaritan Fund. The fund, launched in 2019, has already provided more than $37,000 in aid, and demand is rising with an older population, inflation, and reduced Medicaid support. This month, the Charlevoix County Community Foundation boosted the program with a $10,000 Urgent Needs Grant. Health center leaders say the fund is vital for seniors and families facing major treatments and costly mainland travel.

The Northwest Michigan Area Agency on Aging and Michigan’s Long Term Care Ombudsman Program are looking for volunteers to be advocates for residents in nursing homes and other care facilities across 10 northern Michigan counties. Volunteer Ombudsmen visit facilities, listen to residents’ concerns, and help ensure they’re treated fairly. Training, support, and mileage reimbursement are provided. There’s more info in a link in today’s script online.

Happy Birthday to all those people, and if we missed you on the list, Happy Birthday to you too from everyone at WVBI and your Beaver Island Community Center!

TRAFFIC: No delays inbound or outbound to the airports. The island beltway is running smoothly with no bridge delays. But let’s be careful out there—especially in the school zone.

On this date In the early morning hours of September 19, 1777, British General John Burgoyne launches a three-column attack against General Horatio Gates and his American forces in the First Battle of Saratoga, also known as the Battle of Freeman’s Farm.

Although the Americans were able to inflict severe casualties on the British, a delay in ordering a counter-attack forced the Americans to fall back. During the five-hour battle, the Americans lost approximately 280 troops killed, while the British suffered a more severe loss of more than 550 killed.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is lagom – noun

the principle of living a balanced, moderate, and simple life

The garden was the epitome of lagom, tidy but never overly manicured.

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Friday…

Here’s a thought for the day from George Bernard Shaw who said, “We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.”

On a lighter note… a friend of mine applied to be a bus driver and was called to go in for an interview. He arrived late for the interview and apologized for being late. The interviewer said, not a problem, you’re hired.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar Report for this Beaver Island Friday, September 19th, 2025. I’m Greg Doig reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios, wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And thanks for listening.
