Community Calendar Report For Thursday, May 15, 2025

Community Calendar Report for Thursday, May 15th, 2025.

First some news…

Summary of a Petoskey News Review article by Jillian Fellows

Northern Michigan is still bouncing back from that brutal ice storm that hit back in March, causing all sorts of chaos with fallen trees and power outages. While the big wheels of government are turning—with a $100 million relief plan already through the House and federal funds on the way—local heroes aren’t waiting around. Michigan’s credit unions have stepped up with a cool $358,000 in donations, while Consumers Energy Foundation chipped in $50,000 and Great Lakes Energy’s People Fund kicked in another $10,000. The Michigan Credit Union Foundation has been offering $500 emergency grants to members hit hard by the storm, and Consumers Energy spread their generosity across several community foundations in the northeast region, Otsego, and Petoskey-Harbor Springs areas. Want to help? You can donate through any of these community foundations by heading over to michigan.gov/icestorm. Every little bit helps our neighbors up north get back on their feet!

Now, here’s a look at events happening on your Emerald Isle…

NAME OF DAY: The BIC Center Name of the Day is Shane If that’s your name, head on down to the BIC Center to pick out a free drink of your choice.

BIRTHDAYS: Darrell Butler Jr, Ashley Runberg and if we missed you on the list, Happy Birthday to you too from everyone at WVBI and your Beaver Island Community Center! [And, here’s a way to send special birthday wishes to someone on the island: The B-I-C-S National Honor Society will put up a sign in their yard in exchange for a donation of $10 or more to the Build a Cure for Cancer fund. Contact N-H-S president Alyssa Martin for more details. You can reach her through the front desk at school.]

TRAFFIC: The W-V-B-I virtual octocopter is flying high in the Island skies and spies…no traffic.  But, cleanup work continues down-island.  So, watch out for the road crews and let’s be careful out there.

On this day in 1800, President John Adams orders the federal government to pack up and leave Philadelphia and set up shop in the nation’s new capital in Washington, D.C.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is

Impervious – Impervious describes that which does not allow something (such as water or light) to enter or pass through. It is also used formally to mean “not bothered or affected by something.” Both senses of impervious are usually used with to.

// The material is impervious to water.

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Thursday

Here’s a thought for the day – I don’t think that we’re meant to understand it all the time. I think that sometimes we just have to have faith. Nicholas Sparks.

On a lighter note… A friend told me that doing lunges is a great exercise. It would also be a big step forward.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar Report for this Beaver Island Thursday, May 15th, 2025. I’m Greg Doig reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And thanks for listening.
