News Update

Community Calendar for Tuesday, February 22nd, 2022

From our Langford Family studios on America’s Emerald Isle, this is the WVBI Community Calendar for Tuesday, February 22nd, 2022.

First some news …

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development is in the process of setting up the state’s first ever Department of Rural Development, that in response to an executive order from Governor Whitmer on New Year’s Day. It will have a number of areas of focus of interest to the island including healthcare, broadband and housing. According to Beaver Island Chamber Director Paul Cole those are key issues on the island. “They are key to our sustainability and growth,” he says. Dick Mulvihill, who leads the Beaver Island Association and who has been working on its broadband committee for over five years hopes that the new office will be an ally in continuing work to improve service on the island.  “As soon as the new director of the office is named, we plan to be in touch with them,” he says, “working with the island’s Joint Telecommunications Advisory Committee.” Full disclosure: I chair that Committee. Last Sunday’s Traverse Ticker has an interview with Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development director Gary McDowell about how the new office will operate and the projects it will undertake—including those key issues for the island we mentioned.  There’s a link to the article in today’s script online: https://www.traverseticker.com/news/no-zip-code-left-behind-how-michigans-new-office-of-rural-development-might-impact-northern-michigan/

BIRTHDAYS:  Nick Olson, Mila Mooney and Kayla Anderson are celebrating today. Happy Birthday to Kayla, Mila and Nick, and, if we missed you on the list Happy Birthday to you, too, from all of us at W-V-B-I and your Beaver Island Community Center.

TRAFFIC:  None, nada, zip.  Still, let’s be careful out there.

ON THIS DAY in 1948 a coup brings Communist rule to Czechoslovakia. With the might of the Soviets behind them, Czechoslovak socialists take power by coup d’état, ushering in what will be 40 years of dictatorship, and spurring the West to enact the Marshall Plan. Hmmmm. Sounds familiar. Meantime on this date in 1972, U-S President Richard Nixon was spending the first full day of what was the first visit of a U-S president to Communist China. (Bing.com)

WORD OF THE DAY: transpire (Verb) [tran-SPYRE], which means “to happen” or “to become known.” Transpire (based on Latin spirare, meaning “to breathe”) was originally used technically to describe the passage of vapor through the pores of a membrane (such as the skin). From this use developed the figurative sense: “to escape from secrecy” or “to become known.” That sense was used in ambiguous contexts and often meant “to happen” or “to take place.” (Merriam-Webster)

Now, to wrap up for this for Beaver Island Tuesday…

Here’s a thought for the day from President Richard Nixon: “I had never expected that the China initiative would come to fruition in the form of a Ping-Pong team.”

On a lighter note: What did the ping pong ball say to the shuttlecock?  Nice skirt.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Tuesday, February 22nd, 2022. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day– and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever?  And, thanks for listening.
