First some news … On COVID-19 front, the Health Center is reporting two tests back as negative. None outstanding. Their tally now has no positive tests in the last two weeks. The state’s report released Friday continued to show good trends with an average of 1,914 new cases and 31 new deaths a day. That pushes the seven-day averages to 1,925 a day for new cases and 69 for deaths including reclassifications. In our region there were 109 total new cases over the two days covered by the report and one death. Three of the new cases were in Charlevoix. The single death was in Grand Traverse. Hospital utilization rates continue to be high for COVID-19, but the overall rates are near normal. No patients at Munson in Charlevoix. 16 at McLaren in Petoskey, but none in the I-C-U. Governor Whitmer launched her campaign to repeal the retirement tax in Bay City yesterday in a meeting with union members. Her office says it would save 500,000 households about $1,000 a year in taxes. In local news, the Lake G Ice fishing tournament was a big hit with a big turnout despite the nippy weather. Many fish were caught, and lunch was served. We’ll have a winners list tomorrow. Warblers on the Water organizer Pam Grassmick says tickets are about to go on sale for this year’s event. She says they include trips to High and Garden islands as well as all of the best birding locations on Beaver. As usual, events will be on Memorial Day weekend and will include free presentations here at the BIC Center as well as the field trips. Tickets go on sale tomorrow at noon. They typically go very quickly. |

BIRTHDAYS: Olive Ledbetter is celebrating today. Happy Birthday to Olive, and, if we missed you on the list Happy Birthday to you, too, from all of us at W-V-B-I and your Beaver Island Community Center. |
TRAFFIC: None, nada, zip. Still, let’s be careful out there. |
ON THIS DAY in 1599 William Shakespeare, with seven others, leases marshland in Southwark [suth-UK] on the river Thames [tems]. The playwright now owns a share in what will become the Globe Theatre, where some of his most memorable plays will first be staged, including ‘Julius Caesar,’ ‘Macbeth,’ ‘Othello,’ ‘King Lear,’ and ‘Hamlet,’ while also creating the opportunity to wonder at once why Suth-Uk is spelled like Southwark and Tems is spelled like Thames. WORD OF THE DAY: invincible (adjective) [in-VIN-suh-bul], which means “incapable of being conquered, overcome, or subdued.” Invincible comes from Latin invincibilis—a combination of the negative prefix in- with the Latin verb vincere, meaning “to conquer.” Vincere also gave English vincible, meaning (unsurprisingly) “capable of being overcome or subdued.” (Merriam-Webster) |

Now, to wrap up for this for Beaver Island Monday… |
Here’s a thought for the day from William Shakespeare: “No legacy is so rich as honesty.” On a lighter note: How does the pickup truck get across the river Thames? It fords it. |
