News Update

Community Calendar for Friday, February 18th, 2022

From our Langford Family studios on America’s Emerald Isle, this is the WVBI Community Calendar for Friday, February 18th, 2022.

First some news …

On COVID-19 front, nothing new from the Health Center. No new tests. Two tests pending. Their tally now has just one person with a positive test in the last two weeks.  Next report from the state is due this afternoon. We’ll take a look at that on Monday.

Kids at B-I-C-S looking forward to school today without masks.  They are off for now except when social distancing can’t be maintained for extended periods.

The townships have issue each issued R-F-Ps to complete an updated Master Plan for the island. They seek an update to the current plan based on community input including a series of meetings that would start in May. The last update was completed in 2017. The deadline to complete the updated plan is October 1. Proposals are due on March 15.  Copies of the R-F-Ps are available at links in today’s script online. [The RFPs are here: https://wvbi.biccenter.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/St.-James-Township-Master-Plan-RFP.pdf and here: https://wvbi.biccenter.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Peaine-Township-Master-Plan-RFP.pdf.]

The Joint Telecommunications Advisory Committee held a special meeting yesterday to discuss the island’s broadband plans with staffers from Congressman Debbie Dingell’s office. The Committee expressed the view that the past approach taken by congress, which focuses broadband development fund on incumbent carriers isn’t working for remote, rural communities like Beaver Island.  They urged that funds be directed to community driven projects. Although Dingell’s district is downstate, she has special concerns about broadband and wanted to learn about the island’s issues.  Meantime, the committee had an update on its project to bring 200 megabit per second service to key locations on the island including the library, school and community center.  All of the equipment is in and is being configured and tested. Next task is scheduling the installation with a goal of having the system running by spring. Full disclosure:  I chair the committee.

Now, here’s a look at what’s happening on your island…

Here’s your meeting planner for next week: Only things showing on the docket right now are the B-I-E-S-A meeting on Thursday at 2:00 and the Elks at 5:00.

On the fun front today, Friday, Pickleball is on again—in the Theater at the BIC Center at 10:00. Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program is on up in the Hangout at 10:30 and at noon it’s C-O-A’s winter BINGO game also here at the BIC Center. And, Friday evening the BIC Center kicks off its Winter Documentary Film Series with Fish and Fishing as the theme. First show is The Sea Baron, which tells the story of a fisherman’s house in Iceland that’s become a world famous, hole-in-the-wall fish joint. Showing is at 6:00 up in the comfort of the Hangout. Bring your own snacks and drink or get something at the Concession stand.

Saturday, the annual Beaver Island Wildlife Club Lake G fishing tournament is on with fishing from 6 am to 5:30 pm.  There are Pike and Bluegill prizes for adults and Pike and panfish prizes for kids—first second and third place for all categories. The chamber is sponsoring food from noon to 2. Prizes are at the boat launch at 5:30. It’s a D-N-R free fishing weekend, so no license required.

Also Saturday, the Library and Historical Society continue a series of weekly workshops on using the Library Edition of Ancestry dot com.  Start time is 1:00 p.m. The workshops will continue on Saturdays through February.

Movies are back at the BIC Center Saturday afternoon.  The 4:00 show is First Kid with Sinbad and at 7:00 it’s the American President with Michael Douglas and Annette Benning. Both shows on the BIG screen with the BIG sound. Concession Stand open for both. Trailers for those shows and the film series are on the BIC Center website at bic center dot org.

Sunday there are services at Holy Cross, the Christian Church, and the Lighthouse fellowship.  Times and more details are in the calendar.

And mark your calendar (and get your act prepared) for the next open mic night at the Bodega.  That’s next Tuesday at 7.

Monday, Chair Yoga is on at 10:30 up in the Hangout here at the BIC Center.

Tuesday, Tai Chi is on up in the Hangout at 9:30. Pickleball is on at 10:00 in the Theater. And the Arthritis Foundation Exercise program is on at 10:30 in the Hangout. Tuesday evening it’s open mic night at the Harbour Bodega. Signup starts at 6:30. Performances at 7:00.

Thursday, Tai-Chi is at 9:30 and Pickleball at 10 here at the BIC Center.  And you can play Euchre Thursday evening over at the Whiskey Point Brewing Company.  Cards hit the table at 7:00.

BIRTHDAYS:  Alice Belfy is celebrating today. Tomorrow is the day for Britta Dabakey and Martellen Dawson. Sunday, Brad Coffell and Jennifer Wojan celebrate. Happy Birthday to Jennier, Britta, Alice, Martellen and Brad, and, if we missed you on the list Happy Birthday to you, too, from all of us at W-V-B-I and your Beaver Island Community Center.

TRAFFIC:  None, nada, zip.  Still, let’s be careful out there.

ON THIS DAY in 1930 Pluto is first spotted. Clyde Tombaugh, a 23-year-old astronomer at Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, finds ‘Planet X’ with the help of a blink microscope. The immensely far-off object will be called Pluto, but will be stripped of its planetary status in 2006 and reclassified as merely a “dwarf planet.” (Bing.com)

WORD OF THE DAY: hew (verb) [HYOO], which  is commonly used in the phrase to hew to, meaning “to conform to or adhere to (something).” The word also means “to give shape to with or as if with an ax.” Both hewed and hewn are used as past participles. Hew refers to shaping something with a tool (such as an ax), but what does that have to do with conforming or adhering to something? That use of the word was influenced by the phrase “to hew to the line.” The “line” is the mark along the length of a log indicating where to chop in order to shape a beam. “Hewing to the line,” literally, is cutting along the mark—adhering to it—until the side of the log is squared. (Merriam-Webster)

Now, to wrap up for this for Beaver Island Friday…

Here’s a thought for the day from Yoko Ono: “Each planet has its own orbit agenda. Think of people close to you as planets. Sometimes it’s nice to just watch them orbit and shine.”

On a lighter note: Why did Sonic the Hedgehog go to Saturn? To get all the rings.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Friday, February 18th, 2022. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day– and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever?  And, thanks for listening.
