WVBI COVID-19 Update for February 1, 2022

Nothing new from the Health Center this morning, but data released by the state shows some big shifts. There’s usually a dip in new case reporting and hospital occupancy in reports that cover the weekend, but the Monday’s data—which coverers last Friday through Sunday—seems to be more than that. There were just over 7,000 cases a day compared to 13,155 cases a day in the last report—and almost 50% drop. Not as big a change in deaths—there were 26 new deaths a day reported last Friday and 22 in the latest report, but those numbers tend to trail changes in case counts. The other big shift is in hospital utilization. Overall occupancy has dropped to about 79% for both all and I-C-U beds and COVID-19 occupancy is down about three points to 15.2% for regular beds and down five points to 19.2% for I-C-U beds. Those rates are still high, but they show a drop from where they had been. In our region there were an average of 140 new cases a day down from 190 and no deaths, down from 1. 36 of the new cases were in Charlevoix.

Those numbers are aligned with big declines in new cases across the nation. Perhaps Omicron is in retreat.

Although it may be too late for the current surge, K-N 95 masks are now available for seniors at the C-O-A. The Health Department of Northwest Michigan says they will be distributing them, soon as well, but we are still waiting on details. They are part of ten million free masks from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services—all of this in response to the C-D-C’s conclusion that cloth and procedural masks aren’t adequate for Omnicron.

Here are our data summaries from the state’s Monday reports. Note that they made a change up in columns and data in their hospital utilization table. Now instead of providing breakout data on adult ICU beds, they are doing it for pediatric beds. And, they changed the layout order.
