First, some news…
Following up on her order closing bars and restaurants, Michigan’s governor has no banned gatherings of 50 or more people in the state. She has also lifted weight restrictions on cargo trucks to allow more efficient delivery of coronavirus supplies. Meantime, the C-D-C is now recommending against ordered bars and restaurants to close in hopes of limiting the spread of coronavirus. The number of coronavirus cases in Michigan at the last update was 54, including a person who resides in Charlevoix, but who is being treated down state after returning from an overseas trip. No cases reported on the island.
We understand that Dalwhinnie’s and the Shamrock plan to be open for take out service. They are still working on the hours for Dalwhinnie—but expect service clustered around lunchtime. Shamrock will be open Thursday through Saturday from 5 to 7 with a single item on the menu each day. Thursday is a Double Cheeseburger with French fries, Friday a Fish Fry and Saturday their famous Prime Rib. They’ll start taking orders at 4 each of those days. for both and maybe dinner for the Shamrock. Call them for the latest details (and to place your order).
The BIC Center will remain open, but until further advice from the health department, no more than five guests can be in the building at any one time. As a result, all activities have been cancelled, but the center will be available if you need internet access, a PC or a printer. The restrooms will also be available. Small group meetings are OK, too, but you should coordinate those with the front desk. All other activities are cancelled for now, so no Pickleball, no Games Galore or Arthritis Foundation Exercise program. BIRTHDAYS: Sharon Vance is celebrating. Happy birthday to Sharon, and, if we missed you on the list today, Happy Birthday to you, too, from all of us at WVBI and your Beaver Island Community Center.
ON THIS DAY in 461 Patrick, Irish bishop, dies. Legend has it that on this day the Christian missionary and bishop Patrick dies in Ireland. He will be revered for his works and life, and by the seventh century he will have become Ireland’s patron saint. Patrick’s thoughts on green beer and ‘Kiss me I’m Irish’ t-shirts will be lost to the ages.
WORD OF THE DAY: crwth (KROOTH) which means an ancient Celtic stringed instrument that is plucked or bowed. Crwth, which comes to us from Welsh, is the name for an ancient Celtic instrument that is similar to a violin. In Middle English, the instrument’s name was spelled crouth before metamorphosing to crowd, a word still used in some dialects of England to refer to a violin. Crwth can also refer to a swelling or bulging body, and we can speculate that it came to be used for the instrument because of the violin’s bulging form. Other Celtic words for the violin also have meanings referring to rounded shapes. In Gaelic, for example, cruit can mean “harp” or “violin” as well as “hump” or “hunch.” (merriam-webster.com)
Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island St. Patrick’s Day…
Here’s a thought for the “When everything feels like an uphill struggle, just think of the view from the top.” On a lighter note: Why can’t you borrow money from a leprechaun? Because they’re always a little short.
