In a sudden and pretty sudden shift, Beaver Island Community School has switched to online class sessions for today and tomorrow. That after a raft of positive COVID-19 tests last week. B-I-C-S superintendent and principal Wil Cwikiel says the change is an effort to slow the spread. A decision about what to do on Wednesday and for the rest of the week is yet to come. Given that the positive tests started showing up early last week, the hope is that enough folks will be past their quarantine periods to allow school to restart at the middle of this week. For today and tomorrow, lunch will still be made and available for pick-up at the school. If you are signed up for lunch, please call the school office and let them know if you still plan to pick it up. Students who need material from school–books, laptops or other things may stop by school to pick those items up. BASH…the school’s end of year banquet and party…has been reset to this coming weekend. It had been planned for this Saturday. Likewise, the 4th, 5th and 6th grade play that had been set for this Friday has been rescheduled to June.
The Health Center now reports 30 tests run this month with 16 back positive. They are collecting data from their own tests as well as tests at school and reported from homes. There appear to be about 18 people with positive tests for cases that would be considered active on the island under the 30 day standard. Latest hospital utilization data released Friday shows the same slight uptick in COVID-19 occupancy that we’ve been seeing for several weeks now, but nothing dramatic. Indeed, Munson in Charlevoix is back down to no patients. McLaren in Petoskey has six, which is up one.
But, Bridge Michigan is reporting this morning that their analysis shows that half of Michigan residents are now under the C-D-C’s recommendation for mask use indoors at public places, and positive test rates are surging across the state. The last state data, release last Wednesday afternoon while the Community Calendar was on hiatus, showed the continuing surge in new cases, but also showed deaths at a fairly steady and low rate. Next update from the state on that front is due this Wednesday.
