Weather

Every month the Corps of Engineers in Detroit publishes reports on the Great Lakes water level for all five lakes and summarizes the inflows to the lakes from rain, snow and  Canada and outflows thru the Chicago River and Lake Ontario.

As Johnny Cash use to sing,

How high’s the water, mama?

Two feet high and risin’

How high’s the water, papa?

Two feet high and risin’.

So the water level in Lake Michigan continues to rise.   A ride around the harbor shows  some of the docks are just above the  water and most of the area across the street from the Toy Museum is now flooded.   Officially Lakes Michigan-Huron, St. Clair, Erie and Ontario are in the midst of their seasonal rise and are 7 to 10 inches above what they were a month ago.  Lakes Michigan-Huron, St. Clair, and Erie are 11 to 16 inches higher, and Lake Ontario 22 inches is higher than they were at this time last year.

Here on Lake Michigan we are 15-inches above the average April water level, 11-inches higher than last year, and 18-inches below the high water mark of April 1986.    We can expect the water to rise 3 more inches by next month.

Not quite “2-feet high and rising” but a significant change since last year.

Dr Jeff Powers – Next Friday we will be holding a Lyme and Heart worm testing and vaccination clinic.

Black Legged Deer Ticks are already very prevalent this year and it is imperative that your dogs receive testing, vaccination and prevention. Last year close to 30 dogs tested positive for Lyme Disease on Beaver Island with several becoming very ill.

We will have discounts on all vaccinations, testing and anti-parasitic medication. Please contact the hardware store 2314482572 or 2318814408 to set up an appointment.

We hope to have additional clinics in the spring but the presence of large numbers of ticks present on the island at this time warrants addressing this issue now.

If you are looking for information on all island events, find it on the new WVBI Community Calendar. Just head on over to the WVBI website and click on Calendar on the top menu.

We’ve tried to include everything, but if we’ve missed your event you can easily add it yourself by using the handy “Post Your Event” button in the upper right of the calendar or by sending an email with the details to¬†calendar@wvbi.net. The team did an outstanding job of representing the spirit of First Robotics competition and gathered praise from loads of folks present. Other teams marveled at the robot and the team’s ability. The goodwill gathered for the island was tremendous. Team members, mentors and family members in attendance were asked repeatedly questions about Beaver Island, its location, and the quizzical query, is it really an island? This was great to hear and even better spreading the word to those who may one day appear as visitors to this island. Find out more at BIROBOT.org and look at the Twitter feed for links. Special Community Meeting

Beaver Island services for the aging

BICC March 30th 10 AM

Charlevoix County Commissioner Nancy Ferguson and the Beaver Island Human Services Commission will be there to discuss current and future needs of services for the aging on the island.

Reposted from Pam Grassmick-

Despite the Commission on Aging (COA) meeting which took place on January 19th and the activities listed in the January 28th Forum post, steps by COA have been taken to significantly decrease the availability of senior in-home services on Beaver Island. This weekend, the Beaver Island Christian Church, Holy Cross Church, and the Lighthouse Fellowship distributed form letters to be submitted to the Charlevoix County Board of Commissioners. This letter asks that assurances be made that all Charlevoix County residents be given equal and adequate COA services year round and that these senior services be restored. If you would like to obtain a copy of this letter in support of restoring Beaver Island’s senior services and submit to the Charlevoix County Board of Commissioners, the letter can be picked up at the Community Center, the library, or McDonough’s Market.

It’s 36° outside this morning and feels like 28°, wind is at 12 mph from the NW with gusts to 17 mph, humidity is at 94%, pressure is rising from 1012 mb, and visibility is at 9.6 miles. Tonight: Mostly clear. Lows in the mid 20s. North winds at 15 mph with gusts to around 25 mph.

On this date of March 28, 1797 – Nathaniel Briggs patented a washing machine. NOTE: it seemed appropriate to mention this as it is Monday morning and the traditional day for laundry.

Did you know that giraffes and rats can last longer without water than camels? Due to the high water content in the food they eat, giraffes have the ability to go weeks without drinking water — though when they do, they do it in a big way, guzzling up to 12 gallons at a time. Giraffes are impressive, but in terms of endurance, kangaroo rats blow everybody else out of the water. Not that they need to be in the water either. Kangaroo rats never drink water. They live in arid environments, such as the Sonora Desert of the American Southwest, and are able to metabolize water from their food, which consists of primarily seeds.
