NEWS

Beaver Island Community Players and Radio Players

Scripts are available for the upcoming stage play auditions. The play is called the Boarding House and is available to check out at the Beaver Island District Library. Auditions will be in March with a production date of Memorial Weekend. Open to all interested folks.

Despite the Commission on Aging (COA) meeting which took place on January 19th and the activities listed in the January 28th Forum post, steps by COA have been taken to significantly decrease the availability of senior in-home services on Beaver Island. A form letter was drafted for residents to send to the COA. If you would like to obtain a copy of this letter in support of restoring Beaver Island’s senior services and submit to the Charlevoix County Board of Commissioners, the letter can be picked up at the Community Center, the library, or McDonough’s Market. Without action, COA will deprive island elders of hard-fought services such as light housekeeping, laundry, medication reminders, nutritional meals, and personal care.

All you cold weather junkies….get out your ice fishing gear and head to Lake G. March 5th for an ice fishing tournament.

The public access will be opened for folks to get to the lake.

There will be a kids category (up to age 14) and an adult category.

Weigh in will be at the boat launch/public access.

There will be prizes for both kids and adults winning as largest fish in its class. (Walleye and Pike for the adults). Bass season is catch and immediate release only, so we won’t be fishing for them.

Other notes- you must have a license if you are 17 or older. No more than 3 lines in the water/person at a time.

If you have equipment/shanties etc. that you will lend out for kid use and others, please let us know.

We are asking you to sign up at the Hardware… there is no entrance fee, we just want to know how many to expect.

Watch for the weather updates too. If it looks bad (blizzard, rain, too warm, slushy ice…) we’ll have to cancel

In cooperation with the Media Lab at the Beaver Island Community School we are pleased to present new episodes of the Student Writer’s Almanac. Tune in on weekdays just after the news at 8:00 a.m., noon, 3:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m. and midnight to hear the latest literary work from students at the island’s schools. The rest of this week, we’ll present some works from past students at the school.

You’ll be pleased and amazed and the quality of work our island students produce. You can hear it all on WVBI on 100.1 on the island and worldwide at www.wvbi.net.

Things are moving along with the BICS FRC team. The students have worked hard to this point and have some more work ahead. You can follow their progress on a website that Kevin Boyle has put out there. The address is birobot.org

Take a look at the post “Join the BIROBOT Team as a sponsor”. There is as some cool stuff given to sponsors that donate.

Right now I’m showing 28° with a windchill of 22°, wind is at 5 mph from the south, humidity is at 88%, pressure is steady at 1023 mb, and visibility is at 8.8 miles. Today: Mostly cloudy. Scattered flurries in the morning. Highs in the mid 30s. South winds at 10 mph with gusts to around 25 mph. Tonight: Mostly cloudy. Lows in the mid 20s. South winds at 10 mph.

On this date of February 23, 1954 the first injections of the new polio vaccine developed by Dr. Jonas Salk were given to a group of children from Arsenal Elementary School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Did you know that the The Code of Hammurabi decreed that bartenders who watered down beer would be executed. The Code of Hammurabi is a well-preserved Babylonian law code of ancient Mesopotamia, dating back to about 1754 BC. It is one of the oldest deciphered writings of significant length in the world.

WVBI News

Today is Wednesday, February 24th, 2016. I’m Greg Doig with today’s WVBI Community Calendar.

NEWS

Beaver Island Community Players and Radio Players

The players are gearing up for the next radio play- practice/auditions start on Wed. Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. at the Community Center. We will be performing one of the Burns/Allen comedies called Gracie takes up crime solving. Join us… we need many voices!

Also, scripts are available for the upcoming stage play auditions.

This weekend, the Beaver Island Christian Church, Holy Cross Church, and the Lighthouse Fellowship distributed form letters to be submitted to the Charlevoix County Board of Commissioners. This letter asks that assurances be made that all Charlevoix County residents be given equal and adequate COA services year round and that these senior services be restored. If you would like to obtain a copy of this letter in support of restoring Beaver Island’s senior services and submit to the Charlevoix County Board of Commissioners, the letter can be picked up at the Community Center, the library, or McDonough’s Market.

Thank you for your consideration and assistance in efforts to restore vital senior services.

COA Letter

Posted Posted in News Update

Here is the form that can be used to create a letter to the Charlevoix County Commission in support of maintaining full COA services on Beaver Island:

Mr. Joel Evans, Chair
Charlevoix County Commissioners
10448 Lord Rd.,
East Jordan, MI 49727

Dear County Commissioners:

You may not have been aware that the Commission on Aging has taken steps that have significantly decreased the scope and availability of senior home care/personal services to the the Beaver Island community. Our island population is older, 10 years older on average than most of Charlevoix County, with roughly 31% over the age of 70. Many no longer have children living on the island that can assist in our care to “age in place”. Islanders have another unique issue in that we are unable to share county services due to our geographic isolation.

Aging in Place is an important economic issue for the Beaver Island community and the county. All of us on Beaver Island pay taxes to ensure that elder-care in-home services are available throughout Charlevoix County through the Commission on Aging. Beaver Island sends more than $75,000 to Charlevoix in COA taxes. These COA taxes collected from Beaver Island more than offset the cost of in-home services according to Shirely Gillespie. This year the county taxpayers will be asked for a renewel of that millage. We need to protect the services for our elders so that they are assured that they can receive care on the island. Most island elders don’t need full-time services. Some of the services COA provides deals with assistance for daily tasks such as light housekeeping, laundry, medication reminders, providing nutritional meals, and personal care. COA’s trained caregiver allows our elders to receive services and care at home. Many studies have shown that the ability to remain in one’s home significantly increases longevity and quality of life.

If the island is no longer attractive to those over 60 chosing to retire and pay taxes here, it has long range implications for the island’s economy and that of Charlevoix County. We respectfully request that the Charlevoix County Commissioners provide assurances that all taxpayers in Charlevoix County be treated equally and that adequate COA services be available to island residents. We are requesting that commissioners postpone any decision to further decrease senior services by the COA until a more thorough review of COA’s budget and plan is discussed with the island townships and community.

Sincerely,

Community Calendar for February 19, 2016

Storyline

70-year-old widower Ben Whittaker has discovered that retirement isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Seizing an opportunity to get back in the game, he becomes a senior intern at an online fashion site, founded and run by Jules Ostin.

Originally set up at Paramount Pictures, The Intern was planned to feature Tina Fey and Michael Caine in the lead roles. When a budget could not be settled, Meyers decided to pre-package before going out to other studios and was able to start negotiations for both actors.[4] Handed over to Warner Bros., Fey was replaced by Reese Witherspoon as the attached star, though Witherspoon left the film on January 15, 2014, due to scheduling conflicts.[4] As of February 7, Anne Hathaway was in final talks to replace Witherspoon in the lead role.[5] Stephen Goldblatt was set as director of photography.[6] On June 23, Zack Pearlman joined the cast of the film.[7]

On this date of February 17, 1911 the First Electric Self Start was installed in a Cadillac By GM. Up till this time and all cars needed to be started by cranking a starting handle which was hard work and caused multiple minor injuries when the car backfired during the starting process.

Did you know that University of Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh played Screech’s cousin on a 1996 episode of Saved by the Bell: The New Class?

Word of the day: llutestring (LOOT-string) which means a glossy silk fabric. This fabric has nothing to do with a lute string. The word is a corruption of French lustrine, from Italian lustrino, from Latin lustrare (to make bright). Ultimately from the Indo-European root leuk- (light), which also gave us lunar, lunatic, light, lightning, lucid, illuminate, illustrate, translucent, lux, lynx, pellucid, lucubrate, limn, levin, and lea. Earliest documented use: 1661.
