BIRTHDAYS:   No names listed for today but if we missed you on the list, Happy Birthday to you too from all of us at W-V-B-I and your Beaver Island Community Center.

TRAFFIC:  None. But, let’s be careful out there.

ON THIS DAY

On March 9, 1959, the first Barbie doll goes on display at the American Toy Fair in New York City.

Eleven inches tall, with a waterfall of blond hair, Barbie was the first mass-produced toy doll in the United States with adult features. The woman behind Barbie was Ruth Handler, who co-founded Mattel, Inc. with her husband in 1945. After seeing her young daughter ignore her baby dolls to play make-believe with paper dolls of adult women, Handler realized there was an important niche in the market for a toy that allowed little girls to imagine the future.

WORD OF THE DAY: Our Merriam Webster word of the Ingratiate Ingratiate means “to gain favor or acceptance by deliberate effort.” It is usually used with with, and is often (though not always) used disapprovingly. Scam artists often have an uncanny ability to ingratiate themselves with their victims using subtle flattery that only seems obvious in retrospect.

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Thursday…

Here’s a thought for the day “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose.” Dr Seuss

On a lighter note: If you have ever witnessed a crime at an Apple store that would make you an iWitness.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Thursday, March 9th, 2023. I’m Greg Doig reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And, thanks for listening.
