News Update

Community Calendar for Wednesday, October 2nd, 2024

Michigan came up in last night’s vice-presidential debate. Moderator Norah O’Donnell asked if holding parents responsible, as seen in the Oxford case, could curb mass shootings. Both candidates avoided a direct answer. Vance focused on increasing school security, while Walz emphasized gun control measures like red flag laws and background checks. Walz, who once opposed an assault weapons ban, now supports it, citing the voices of Sandy Hook parents. Both addressed gun violence, but with differing approaches.

Candidates running for Michigan’s 1st Congressional District and the 107th State House District gathered at North Central Michigan College in Petoskey on Monday for a forum hosted by the Charlevoix and Petoskey chambers of commerce. Jodi Decker and Parker Fairbairn, running for the 107th District, answered questions from voters and moderator Scott LaDeur, a political science professor at NCMC. Callie Barr, running for Congress, also participated, though incumbent Congressman Jack Bergman did not attend. The event aimed to help voters learn more about the candidates ahead of the November election. The Petoskey News has detailed coverage including a transcript of some candidate questions and answers in their report on the event.  There’s a link to that in today’s script online. https://www.petoskeynews.com/story/news/politics/elections/2024/10/02/barr-decker-fairbairn-talk-housing-local-concerns-at-candidate-forum/75464735007/

Former Charlevoix County Veterans Affairs Director Joshua Galle has pled guilty to four felony counts of embezzlement. Galle admitted to misusing $1,350 in Meijer vouchers intended to help veterans in need. Initially charged with 27 counts, Galle reached a plea deal that dismissed the remaining charges. The investigation began after it was found that vouchers had been issued in the names of deceased veterans. Galle faces up to 10 years in prison, with sentencing set for November 1.

The Island got some additional attention from its Dark Sky sanctuary with coverage by 9 and 10 news down in TC. Reporter Rachek Rademaker came out the island and covered the dedication ceremony.  There’s a link to her report in today’s script online.

The Burt Lake Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians has released a new book, Naajimiijimedaa! (Let’s Find Food!), which combines traditional foraging with contemporary recipes. It’s more than a cookbook—tribal members say it reconnects them with their land and heritage. The project, which includes memories and stories from elders, aims to preserve the tribe’s history of gathering wild foods. Each tribal citizen will receive a copy, and proceeds from sales will support a community building fund. The book is available on the Burt Lake Band’s website.

On this day in 1959, TV’s next stop is a show of shadow and substance. ‘The place is here, the time is now, and the journey into the shadows that we’re about to watch could be our journey.’ So intones Rod Serling as his new anthology series, ‘The Twilight Zone,’ premieres on CBS. The science-fiction-fantasy show will develop a cult following with this and its 155 additional episodes.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day by and fret (verb) [FRET]. To fret is to worry or be concerned. While fretting today usually involves a concern that is figuratively eating at someone, fret has older senses that apply to literal eating. Fret comes from the Old English verb fretan [freh-than], “to devour,” which shares an ancestor with another verb, etan [eh-tahn], the ancestor of eat. In centuries past, animals—or monsters, in the case of Grendel—were said to fret, as were substances that corrode, or eat away, at other substances. But it wasn’t long before fret was also applied to emotional experiences, as when someone frets over an all-consuming thought or trouble. While fret still carries the meanings of “to corrode,” “to fray,” and “to chafe,” among others, one is most likely to encounter its more angsty sense of “to worry or be concerned.”

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Wednesday

Here’s a thought from Twilight Zone creator Rod Serling: “Every Superstate has one iron rule: logic is an enemy and the truth is a menace.”
