With the election coming up next Tuesday, Kamala Harris and Tim Walz rallied young voters in Ann Arbor, urging turnout by November 5th . Harris encouraged the crowd to remind family and friends of the stakes, calling voting “your voice and your power.” Walz used a football analogy, likening the race in Michigan to “two minutes left on the clock.” The rally featured a performance by singer Maggie Rogers, drawing a large, enthusiastic crowd near the University of Michigan.

Former Traverse City Assessor Polly Cairns has filed a lawsuit against the city, claiming she was fired for refusing to approve what she believed was an illegal tax abatement. Cairns alleges her termination violates the Whistleblowers’ Protection Act and is seeking over $25,000 in damages. Her lawsuit claims she faced pressure to approve a 12-month abatement for the Breakwater development, even though it didn’t meet the full-year requirement, leading to her dismissal when she refused. More details on the dispute are in a Traverse Ticker article linked in today’s script.

[Audio Cue: 96 Tears up and under…]

Question Mark and the Mysterians’ “96 Tears” hits the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100. It was recorded in February of that year in a home studio in Bay City, Michigan and featured on Dick Clark’s American Bandstand just three weeks before it hit number one. So far, it’s the only song recorded in Bay City to hit number one.

TRAFFIC: None. But, let’s be careful out there.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is omniscient (adjective) [ahm-NISH-unt]. Omniscient describes someone or something with unlimited knowledge or understanding. Robotics teams often use this word to describe their mentors. One who is omniscient literally knows all. The word omniscient traces back to two Latin roots: omni-, meaning “all” or “universally,” and the noun scientia, meaning “knowledge.” You will recognize omni- as the prefix that tells all in such words as omnivorous (“eating all,” or in actual use, “eating both plants and animals”) and omnipotent (“all-powerful”). Scientia comes from the Latin verb scīre, meaning “to know,” which likewise has a number of other knowledge-related descendants in English, including consciencescience, and prescience (meaning “foreknowledge“).

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Tuesday

Here’s a thought for the day: “Mistakes are proof that you are trying.”

On a lighter note…our bad pumpkin jokes continue: What is a pumpkin’s favorite sport? Squash.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Tuesday, October 29th, 2024. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And thanks for listening.
