The Island’s Invasive Species Team wants you to be on the lookout for Japanese barberry plants on the island. Several plants have been seen in the woods on the east side and south end of the island. They escaped from a yard where they had been planted for decoration. Besides being invasive, they tend to attract ticks at more than 10 times the rate of forests without the plant. So getting rid of them will help with that problem, too. There’s a picture of the plant, which has reddish leaves and thorns, in today’s script online. Shelby Harris, the island’s invasives coordinator can get you more info. The Harbour Bodega’s retail operation is nearing its final day at the end of the week and they are selling out their remaining inventory of spirits, wine and beer at 50% off starting today. Come in and get a bargain, they say. They also have donuts and coffee if you want to but a morning snack. And, don’t forget about the Waste Management Committee Blight Survey. It’s online. It’s anonymous. And it’s important to getting grant funding to clean up the island. There’s a link in today’s script and on the B-I-A website. https://airtable.com/appc0pOjygapuqBEw/shrAZIxZsa5o925He |

ON THIS DAY in 1969 Apollo 12 takes off from Kennedy Space Center in Florida with three astronauts aboard: Charles Conrad, Jr.; Richard Gordon, Jr.; and Alan Bean. A few days later, Conrad and Bean will become the third and fourth persons to walk on the moon’s surface. |
WORD OF THE DAY: Our Merriam-Webster Word of the Day is exigent (adjective) [EK-suh-jun]. It describes things that need to be dealt with immediately, as well as people who expect significant time, attention, or effort from other people. Exigent is a formal word with meanings closely tied to its Latin forbear, exigere, meaning “to demand.” Exigent things and people demand attention—for example, exigent circumstances are so significant that they can be used to justify certain police actions without the warrant typically required. Before exigent joined the language in the early 1600s, the noun exigency was being used to refer to something that is necessary in a particular situation. That word dates to the late 1500s, but even earlier, in the mid-1400s, exigence was on the scene doing the same job. All three words—exigent, exigency, and exigence—continue to meet the demands of English users, albeit not frequently in everyday conversation. |
Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Tuesday… |
Here’s a thought for the day from Apollo 12 astronaut and artist Alan Bean: “One of the great things about the universe is that it’s fair.” On a lighter note: Where do keyboards go to have dinner? The space bar. |
That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Tuesday, November 14th, 2023. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And, thanks for listening. |
