News Update

Community Calendar for Tuesday, July 2nd, 2024

Township officials want you to be aware of some recent scam efforts that use email addresses that look similar to but are not actual township email accounts. The email might say that taxes are unpaid or request personal information. Recent emails have asked for copies of checks and purported to come from Saint James supervisor Bobbi Welke.  The emails may also include a link to a website that looks like a township site but are actually a fake. Township officials won’t send emails that request payment or that request personal information.  So, beware and don’t get scammed.  If in doubt, look up the number of the township office and call to check.

Island road teams were at work yesterday cleaning up the site of the tragic car crash that took the life of Trish Chandler. They removed the trees that were damaged by the fire and made it a lot easier to make a left turn from Camp Three trail onto West side drive.

Saint Claire county health officials say they’ve found a pool of mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus during the county’s seasonal surveillance.

The infected mosquitoes were collected near Emmett Township. This is the county’s first detection of West Nile virus. So far, no human cases have been reported. Symptoms include headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea and rash. In rare cases, West Nile can lead to severe illnesses like inflammation of the brain, or meningitis, inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Severe cases can lead to death.

Down if Elk Rapids, the Village Council has approved a zero percent payment-in-lieu-of-taxes agreement for a new 24-unit, two-building housing project there. The agreement, known as a PILOT deal, allows the developers to pay a percentage of rental income in lieu of traditional taxes to offset costs associated with developing affordable housing and charging below-market rental rates.

In T-C, the planned affordable housing complex at Annika Place is getting a Michigan State Housing Development Authority grant of near 17-million dollars to add 52 affordable housing units there, including five that are accessible. The total project cost is 18-million.

Also in T-C, Freshwater Research & Innovation Center got a one million dollar grant from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy on Monday.  The grant will help with environmental remediation of the Center’s land on East Bay.

Down by Detroit, the Lakeside Mall closed its doors for the last time on Sunday.  The 50 year old mall in Sterling Heights was all but empty.  The site will be redeveloped to feature housing, parks, a hotel, office space, shopping, restaurants and more. About 30 acres will be dedicated to public spaces, including a central park. The project is emblematic of what’s happening to malls on the mainland.

BIRTHDAYS: Jared Roberts, Kelly Collins, Larry Roy, and Nick DeLaat are celebrating today. Happy Birthday to Kelly, Nick, Larry, and Jared. And, if we missed you on our list, Happy Birthday to you too from all of us at W-V-B-I and your Beaver Island Community Center.

TRAFFIC: No delays inbound or outbound to the airports. Island beltway is running smoothly. No bridge delays. But, let’s be careful out there.

On this day in 1897, Italian engineer Guglielmo Marconi, age 23, is awarded a patent in London for a new form of wireless telegraphy, bringing ‘Improvements in Transmitting Electrical impulses and Signals and in Apparatus therefor.’ Marconi’s device will become known by its more common name, the radio. Also on this date in 1964 President Lyndon Johnson signs the Civil Rights Act of 1964 barring racial segregation in public places, and discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is glade (noun) [GLAYD], which is a grassy open space in a forest. Glade, which has been part of the English language since the early 1500s, was originally used not just to indicate a clearing in the woods but often specifically to refer to one filled with sunlight. It’s the sunniness that has led some etymologists over the years to suggest a connection with glad, which in Middle English also meant “shining.” To further the intrigue, a now-obsolete sense of glade once referred to a clear or bright space in the sky, or to a flash of light or lightning.

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Tuesday

Here’s a thought for the day from President Lyndon Johnson: “We can draw lessons from the past, but we cannot live in it.”

On a lighter note: Why did the tree by the forest glade go to the therapist? It had some serious branching out issues.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Tuesday, July 2nd, 2024. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And thanks for listening.
