The Island lost a fixture yesterday with the passing of Don Cole. He was 96. Known for his wit, he was a frequent diner at Dalwhinnie in his later years often inviting folks to “sit with me” or asking to “sit with you.” Stories of the island and his adventures away from it would then ensue. Ken Taylor, another island fixture passed away over the weekend. He was 83. Living in Ann Arbor, he had been a long time island resident and a donor to many causes on the island. His wife Judy passed away last year. For a number of years, they owned and ran the Beachcomber as an ice cream parlor. Details on memorials for both Don and Ken are to come. A fire in Charlevoix over the weekend has the Taffy Barrell closed. The fire was in the apartment above the store and, according to a report in the Charlevoix Courrier, it was noticed early Saturday morning by a baker coming to work at a nearby bakery. There was much concern that the fire could cause extensive damage as has been the case with several other fires in recent years in the town’s critical downtown shopping strip, but the fire department was able to quickly extinguish the blaze and no other businesses are closed. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Photo provided by The City of Charlevoix. Finally, here’s an update on the Verizon service outage. Although an outage had been planned for yesterday morning, that work was postponed. As of yesterday afternoon, Verizon said the work planned for today on the north end will proceed taking their mobile service offline. That will be from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. While Version is down, you can use Wi-Fi calling if available on your device or, you can use temporary cell sites at the BIC Center, Health Center and the Township Airport. But, you will need to be just outside or in those locations to use the service. |

NAME OF DAY: Today’s BIC Center name of the day is Rene. If that’s your name, drop by the BIC Center today for a free drink of your choice. BIRTHDAYS: Kevin Gillespie and Eric Naranjo are celebrating today. Happy Birthday to Eric and Kevin and, if we missed you on the list, Happy Birthday to you, too, from all of us at W-V-B-I and your Beaver Island Community Center. |
TRAFFIC: None, nada, zip. Parking issues seem to have subsided, but it still gets busy when the boat comes in. Let’s be careful out there. |
ON THIS DAY in 1483 Pope Sixtus the fourth consecrates a chapel in Rome after painters, including Botticelli, have finished their frescos. The ceiling, however, still needs a little work, and 25 years later a new pope will hire Michelangelo to paint what will be considered one of the greatest artworks of all time. |
WORD OF THE DAY: Our Merriam-Webster Word of the Day is nexus (noun) [NEK-sus], which is a relationship or connection between people or things. When nexus came into English in the 17th century, it meant “connection” or “link.” Eventually, people began using it to refer to a connected group or series of things, as in “a nexus of relationships.” In recent decades it has taken on a third meaning: “center” or “hub,” perhaps from the notion that a point in the center of an arrangement serves to join together the objects that surround it. |
Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Tuesday… |
Here’s a thought for the day from philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein: “Belief in the causal nexus is superstition.” On a lighter note: Why don’t oysters donate to charity? Because they’re shellfish. |
That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Tuesday, August 15th, 2023. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And, thanks for listening. |
