From our Langford Family Studios on America’s Emerald Isle, this is the W-V-B-I. |
First some news… First Lady Jill Biden visited northern Michigan on yesterday. She launched a new Democratic campaign office at The Village at Grand Traverse Commons in Traverse City and met with staff and customers at King Orchards in Central Lake. Biden arrived at Cherry Capital Airport at 1 PM, greeted by local leaders including Traverse City Mayor Amy Shamroe and author Chasten Buttigieg, spouse of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. At the office opening, Chasten Buttigieg acknowledged concerns about President Biden’s debate performance, urging supporters to stay active and focused. In her remarks, Jill Biden reiterated that Joe Biden is the Democratic nominee and will defeat Donald Trump again, emphasizing his resilience and determination. Meantime, Governor Whitmer was in D-C last night for a meeting at the White House with President Biden and other Democrat Governors. After the meeting, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said that Biden had the governor’s backs through the coronavirus pandemic and “the governors have his back” now. In a post on X, Whitmer said that Biden was the nominee and that she supports him. Before heading to DC, Whitmer announced a new deal to prevent invasive carp from reaching Lake Michigan. The $1 billion Brandon Road Interbasin Project near Chicago aims to block the fish with electric, acoustic, and other deterrents. Whitmer highlighted the importance of the Great Lakes to Michigan’s economy. Michigan and Illinois are contributing $114 million for the first phase, unlocking federal funds for the project. |
Finally, a reminder about fireworks on the island: Consumer grade fireworks are permitted on your private property between 11:00 in the morning and 11:45 at night today and tomorrow. But, they cannot be brought to the island on the ferry or by the airlines, so you need to bring them on your own boat or plane while complying with the rules that apply to the operation of those vehicles. The island’s firework show will be this evening with good viewing anywhere along paradise Bay. |

On this day in 1776 some truths are declared self-evident as the 13 American colonies throw off British rule. Philadelphia’s Continental Congress announces a new nation made up of united states, each a now former colony of Great Britain. The anniversary of this Declaration of Independence, ratified one year into the Revolutionary War, will continue to be celebrated in the US as Independence Day. |
Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is patriot (noun) [PAY-tree-ut], which means a person who loves and strongly supports or fights for their country. To be called a patriot is today considered an honor, but it wasn’t always this way. For much of the 17th century, to be deemed a “good patriot” was to be a lover of one’s country who agreed on political and/or religious matters with whoever was doing the deeming. British loyalists applied the word like a badge to supporters of the ruling monarchy, but then the word took on negative connotations as it was applied first to hypocritical patriots—those who espoused loyalty to the Crown but whose actions said otherwise, and then to outright anti-royalists. But in the 18th century, American writers, including Benjamin Franklin, embraced patriot to refer to colonists who took action against British control. After the American Revolutionary War, patriot settled back into more neutral use, but to this day writers of all and various political stripes grapple over who is deserving of the word. |
Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Thursday…nothing insuperable involved because we are Islanders… |
Here’s a thought for the day from George Washington: “Guard against the impostures of pretended patriotism.” On a lighter note: What do you get when you cross a tyrannosaurus rex with fireworks? DINO-MITE! How about crossing ducks with fireworks? Firequackers. |
That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Thursday, July 4th, 2024. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And thanks for listening. |
