News Update

Community Calendar for Monday, October 28th, 2024

Fromer President Trump’s rally in Traverse City got off to a very late start on Friday. He kept fans waiting after a delayed departure from Texas, where he taped an interview with Joe Rogan. An hour after the planned start time he appeared on a big screen, promising to “step on the gas” for Michigan. Finally arriving to thinning crowds around 10:20 p.m., he talked about Michigan’s auto industry, border security, and education, even taking jabs at political opponents. His plane landed behind the stage, making a dramatic close to the late night.

Meantime, Vice President Kamala Harris, will visit Hemlock Semiconductor in Saginaw County today. Harris plans to meet with workers at the facility, which recently received up to $325 million in federal funding to expand its semiconductor production. Later, she’ll head to a labor union training center in Macomb County, with additional campaign stops planned across Michigan.

The Island got mixed reviews in recent coverage on The Free Press website, which is not the same as the Detroit Free Press, by the way. The piece by A.M. Hickman entitled “A Voyage to a Failed American Kingdom” describes the Island as a gorgeous place where the author hopes to find the America of times gone by. He visited during the Feile, but most of the people he spoke with seemed to be drowning sorrows at the bar. He concluded that the Island was too expensive and left.  There’s a link to the article in today’s script online. https://www.thefp.com/p/a-voyage-to-a-failed-american-kingdom?publication_id=260347&post_id=150730724&action=share&triggerShare=true&isFreemail=true&r=dyq05&triedRedirect=true

Traverse City schools will see over $36 million in upgrades after TCAPS trustees approved a contract with Trane U.S. for energy and building improvements. The Superintendent says the upgrades will keep students “safe, warm, and dry.” Trustees also accepted a $550,000 offer for the former Bertha Vos Elementary School, with plans for the building to be demolished and the land converted into a park.

On this day in 1420, Construction finishes on China’s new capital city. Seventeen years of a massive building project completed, Beijing is now China’s capital. Having restored the Ming Dynasty, Emperor Zhu Di desires a power center to match his ambitions, and he’ll get just that as Beijing’s imperial palace, the Forbidden City, opens this year as well.

TRAFFIC: None. But, let’s be careful out there.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is disbursement (noun) [diss-BERSS-munt]. A disbursement is a payout of money from a fund that has been created for a special purpose. Disbursement can also refer to the money that is paid out. Disbursement was minted in English in the late 16th century by melding the noun suffix -ment with the verb disburse (which in turn comes, in part, from the Medieval Latin word bursa, meaning “money bag”). During the 16th and 17th centuries, deburse, depurse, and dispurse were deposited in the English language bank as synonyms of disburse. Deburse and depurse were also used respectively to form debursement and depursement, but these synonyms of disburse and disbursement all quickly declined in value and were never redeemed.

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Monday

Here’s a thought for the day, a Chinese proverb Lu Xun’s Hot Wind: “Facts beat eloquence.”

On a lighter note…our bad pumpkin jokes continue: Why don’t pumpkins get invited to fancy parties? They’re always showing up smashed.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Monday, October 28th, 2024. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And thanks for listening.
