News Update

Community Calendar for Monday, November 28th, 2022

A small crowd gathered at the Shamrock Saturday evening to witness the prize draw for the Moke that’s graced the sidewalk of the BIC Center since back in May.  PABI Board member and B-I-C-S teacher Deb Robert did an outstanding job drawing backhanded from the ticket bin after it was vigorously tumbled by BIC Center director Paul Cole. The lucky winner of the Moke was island resident Hilary Chadwick.  But, everyone wins because the net proceeds from the raffle go to support the BIC Center and W-V-B-I.  Thanks to all who supported the raffle this year.  If you have suggestions for a prize for next year, Paul says he’d like to hear them.  Send suggestions to admin at bick center dot org (admin@biccenter.org).

Charlevoix City officials have started the search for a new police chief.  That after the sudden resignation of long-time Chief Gerard Doan. The use of a professional recruitment firm to handle the process and present candidates is being considered. City manager Mark Heydlauff says the City council should discuss the qualities the community expects in the new chief and the direction the department should go in the changing policing environment.

Notwithstanding concerns to the contrary, so far there has been no fall wave of COVID in Michigan or on the island. There have been ten positive tests on the island since the end of summer, and so far, no burst from the start of rifle season as we have seen in the past. Statewide, less than 1,000 people are hospitalized for treatment of COVID. But COVID remains a risk, especially for the elderly.  The health department says people are best protected by staying up to date on COVID vaccine boosters.

Connie Boyle has once again organized a toy drive to make sure all kids have something under the Christmas tree. There are collection boxes at the airports on both sides.  Don’t wrap them up.  Just drop new toys off at any location.  There are more details in the calendar entry online.

Here are a pair of special Holiday events to add to your calendar.  This Thursday, December 1st there’ll be s stocking stuffer sleigh ride from the BIC Center out to the lighthouse with goodies available at the pocket gardens that have been decorated by community groups. The ride will stop at the Community Christmas tree for a tree-lighting ceremony and then wind up at the BIC Center for hot cocoa and treats.  Things get started at 6:00 p.m. at the BIC Center. And, on December 11th join us at the BIC Center for a full day of Christmas events including cookie decorating, a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus and a special holiday concert. Cookie decorating gets underway at 1:00, Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive at 2:00 and the concert starts at 4:00.

Now, here’s a look at what’s happening on your island…

Also Sunday, the Christmas Cantata is on at the Christian Church at 3:00.  It’s an Island tradition with musical and vocal ensembles telling the story of Christmas.

Looking ahead to next week….

BIRTHDAYS:  None on the list today, but if we missed you on the list, Happy Birthday to you, too, from all of us at W-V-B-I and your Beaver Island Community Center.

TRAFFIC:  None, nada, zip.  But the melting snow and runoff are making a mess of the down-island roads and deer are buzzing about everywhere. So, let’s be careful out there.

ON THIS DAY in 1520 Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan reaches the Pacific Ocean. He is the first European to make it there after sailing the treacherous waters around the tip of South America. Magellan had left Spain in search of a western route to the Spice Islands. His expedition will be the first to circumnavigate the globe.

WORD OF THE DAY: Our Merriam Webster word of the day is wheedle (verb) [WEE-dul], which means “to use soft words or flattery,” usually for the purpose of persuading someone to do something or to give you something. It is often used disapprovingly, and is frequently followed by the word into, as in “wheedle one’s way into favor.”. Wheedle has been a part of the English lexicon since the mid-17th century, though no one is quite sure how it wheedled its way in. (It has been suggested that the term may have come from the Old English word wǽdlian, which meant “to beg,” but this is far from certain.) Be careful not to confuse wheedle with the similar-sounding weasel. While both words are applied in situations in which someone is trying to persuade another person, weasel is especially apt in cases in which the persuader is being clever or dishonest in their efforts, while wheedle always specifically involves soft words and flattery.

Now, to wrap up for this for Beaver Island Monday…

Here’s a thought for the day from Ferdinand Magellan: “[I]ntrepid spirits seek victory over those things that seem impossible…it is with an iron will that they embark on the most daring of all endeavors…to meet the shadowy future without fear and conquer the unknown.”

On a lighter note:  What happens when bakers lose control of their mixers? Their funnel cake becomes a tornado.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Monday, November 28th, 2022. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day and best Thanksgiving ever? And, thanks for listening.
