Over in Charlevoix, some folks in the city continue to express concerns about the deer population there. The City Council last week approved a new ordinance in a 5-1 vote to allow archery hunting within city limits. The measure permits landowners with enough space to partner with licensed hunters under state rules. Proponents say it’s a cost-effective way to reduce property damage and deer-related accidents while avoiding overpopulation issues.

Michigan’s Attorney General has just announced a new task force to address violence against Indigenous people. The Missing or Murdered Indigenous People Task Force will work with tribes and law enforcement to improve investigations and support victims.

Advocates highlight the need to reduce violence against Indigenous women and children.

Lake Superior’s lake trout population has finally fully recovered and no longer requires stocking, marking a major milestone. That’s according to the Great Lakes Fishery Commission. Decades of overfishing and invasive sea lamprey nearly wiped out the species by the 1990s. Efforts by states, tribes, and Ontario restored the fish, with all lake trout subspecies now at sustainable levels, according to the Commission.

Beaver Island Music Festival performers The Accidentals made a splash at the CMA Awards this week, performing as part of the string section for country star Lainey Wilson’s song “4x4xU.” Band members Sav Buist, Katie Larson, and Katelynn Corll played violin, cello, and guitar, respectively. The Accidentals, formed in 2012, have deep up north Michigan roots but moved to Nashville in 2021 to pursue professional music opportunities. Buist called the CMA appearance “surreal,” thanking Wilson for including them. Wilson, a rising star in country music, took home two awards this year. You can watch the performance on YouTube. There’s a link in today’s script.

Looking ahead to next week…

NAME OF DAY: Today’s BIC Center Name of the Day is Thayer.  If that’s your name come on into the BIC Center today to claim a free drink of your choice.

BIRTHDAYS: None on our list today, but if we missed you on our list, Happy Birthday to you too from all of us at W-V-B-I and your Beaver Island Community Center. And, remember, you can get your copy of the birthday list at the front desk over at school.  Your purchase will help support field trips for B-I-C-S 4th through 6th graders.

TRAFFIC: None. But, let’s be careful out there.

On this day in 1783, three months after the Revolutionary War ended, the last contingent of British troops sail away from New York. General George Washington leads a triumphant march as he retakes the city that the British had occupied since 1776. Also on this day in 1963, John F. Kennedy is buried at Arlington National Cemetery three days after his assassination in Dallas. During the solemn procession to the cemetery, Kennedy’s 3-year-old son John Jr. steps forward and salutes his father a final time.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is chastise (verb) [chass-TYZE]. To chastise someone is to criticize them harshly for doing something wrong. If you want to understand the meaning of chastise (which comes from the Anglo-French verb castier, meaning “to discipline”), you could do worse than to turn to popular music. Pop, rap, jazz, rock, country—there’s not a single genre that isn’t full of songs penned from the point of view of jilted and/or cheated lovers chastising—that is, harshly criticizing—the one who did them wrong. Nearly every song on Beyoncé’s 2016 album Lemonade, for example, is a master class in chastisement, featuring such lyrics as “What a wicked way to treat the girl that loves you” and “Ten times out of nine, I know you’re lying.” Chastise itself pops up in lyrics occasionally, too, as sung by artists including Guns N’ Roses (“So don’t chastise me or think I mean you harm”), Dr. Dre (“Fool, you better recognize / Death Row came to chastise”), and Janet Jackson (“Control and chastise / An instrument of punishment / Like a whip”). Jackson’s use is notable in particular for representing the word’s oldest sense, less common but still in use, of “to inflict punishment on (as with a whip).” So, if you are chastised for listening to music on the radio, now you have a way to chastise your chastiser. It’s a vocabulary builder.

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Monday

Here’s a thought for the day from George Washington: “You have only one way to convince others, listen to them.”

On a lighter note…
Victoria’s Secret is having a Janet Jackson themed sale for the Holidays. All bras are half off.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Monday, November 25th, 2024. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And thanks for listening.
