The fire danger remains set at extreme on the island. That means no outdoor fires are advisable. If you think your well-tended campfire or outdoor grill can’t cause a problem, consider the fire that started last week by Cadillac from a campfire in a ring that had been doused with water. Or the wildfire still burning by Grayling this morning that, you guessed it, was started by a campfire. At last report, it was about 85% contained. There have been evacuations, but right now the D-N-R doesn’t have a number. They do say the fire has burned about 2,400 acres, an area that would be a bit less than a tenth of Beaver Island. |

ON THIS DAY in 1956 New singing sensation Elvis Presley makes his second appearance on NBC’s ‘Milton Berle Show,’ this time to perform his single ‘Hound Dog.’ Teenagers swoon, while the older set and most critics are outraged at Presley’s indecent gyrations. Future TV gigs will film Elvis from the waist up. |
WORD OF THE DAY: Our Merriam-Webster Word of the Day is yips (noun) [YIPS] which refers to a state of nervousness that affects an athlete (such as a golfer) when they’re about to make an important move or play. It is almost always used in the phrase “the yips.” When it comes to sports, yips happen. We’re not sure who coined yips; we also can’t say if this plural noun has anything to do with the singular yip, a word of imitative origin that refers to a dog’s sharp bark. What we do know is that the yips have sported their name since at least the 1930s, and that the term first appeared in golf-related contexts. Anxious for similar language? Perhaps you’re familiar with twisties, a term popularized in 2021 during the Tokyo Olympic games when gymnastics GOAT Simone Biles suffered from an affliction akin to the yips in which gymnasts experience a mental block causing loss of spatial orientation. Twisties doesn’t yet meet the Merriam Webster’s criteria for entry into the dictionary, so they’ve benched it for now. |
Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Monday… |
Here’s a thought for the day from Elvis Presley: “Values are like fingerprints. Nobody’s are the same, but you leave ’em all over everything you do” On a lighter note: What duty was Elvis assigned to when he joined the Army? Looking for Suspicious Minds. |
That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Monday, June 5thonday, 2023. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And, thanks for listening. |
