The under lake power cable that connects the island to the mainland may soon be getting a distant cousin. Wolverine Power Cooperative, which supplies energy to the island’s electric utility Great Lakes Energy, is looking at build a power line under the lake all the way to Wisconsin. Why? The wind farms in the Upper Great Plains produce so much electricity that sometimes power providers have to pay utilities to take it, avoiding grid overloads. Wolverine Power Cooperative in Michigan wants access to this surplus renewable energy, but there’s currently no way to transmit it. Wolverine’s solution? Propose a high-voltage transmission line under Lake Michigan, creating a renewable energy “superhighway.” This could connect Michigan to the larger regional grid and diversify its energy sources. Eric Baker, Wolverine’s president, emphasizes the challenge of Michigan’s limited connections to other states. This proposed solution aims to increase renewable energy use as Michigan phases out coal-fired power plants. On the Island, the Historical Society has announced a potluck to honor long-time board member Dickie McEvoy. It’ll be at the Donegal Bay Pavilion on July 27th at 4:00. On Saturday there’ll also be a car show from noon to 2 at Whiskey Point, a veteran’s ceremony at Veteran’s memorial park and then the pot luck at 4:00. |

On this day in 2011 the Space Shuttle Atlantis launches from Cape Canaveral in Florida on a mission to the International Space Station. It was the 135th shuttle launch and the last as the shuttle program ended upon its return from orbit. Also on this date in 1947 Newspapers report the capture of a “flying saucer” at a ranch near the town of Roswell and question the US military’s story about the crash of a weather balloon. In the 1990s the military will finally reveal that a top-secret nuclear test-monitoring balloon was recovered at the site. Photo from NASA / Tony Gray and Tom Farrar |
Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is dicker (verb) [DIK-er], which means to talk or argue with someone about the conditions of a purchase, agreement, or contract. The origins of the verb dicker likely lie in an older dicker, the noun referring to a quantity of ten animal hides or skins. The idea is that the verb arose from the bartering of, and haggling over, animal hides on the American frontier. The noun dicker comes from decuria, the Latin word for a bundle of ten hides, and ultimately from the Latin word decem, meaning “ten.” The word entered Middle English as dyker and by the 14th century had evolved to dicker. |
