News Update

Community Calendar for Monday, February 5th, 2024

The soft winter has claimed another event…or at least delayed it.  The Island’s traditional winter Ice Fishing Tournament has been put-off from its planned date next week during the D-N-R’s free fishing weekend. Organizers say the ice just isn’t good enough now and isn’t likely to get better by then given the forecasts. Last year the tourney wound up happening in March. It’s organized by the Wildlife Club. They say they’ll make a call on a delayed event in the next several weeks.

Also recently canceled is the D-N-R’s Black Lake sturgeon season.  Again, ice conditions are the cause.  It’s the first time the season has been cancelled.

The Charlevoix County Community Foundation’s Youth Advisory Council, known as YAC, is funding a project to get Indigenous and E-L-L Comfort Kits to kids in the the Char-em I-S-D, which includes Beaver Island. The kits are intended to reduce school related stress. They’ll include Native-themed coloring books, colored pencils, yoga cards, stuffed animals and books. The YAC made the award after a survey of students throughout the I-S-D showed they were most concerned about increasing acceptance and reducing stress. B-I-C-S student Alyssa Martin is a member of YAC.

Looking ahead to next week…

NAME OF DAY: Today’s BIC Center name of the day is Caleb. If that’s your name, head on down to the BIC Center today for a free drink of your choice.

BIRTHDAYS: Thayer McDonough celebrates today. Happy Birthday to Thayer, and if we missed you on the list, Happy Birthday to you too from all of us at W-V-B-I and your Beaver Island Community Center.

TRAFFIC: None, but East and West side drives are pretty pocked up from the thaw.  I deep divot can send you spinning if the odds are not ever in your favor, so let’s be careful out there.

On this date in 1909, Leo Baekeland, a Belgian-born chemist working in New York, announces his invention of the world’s first manmade plastic material, naming it Bakelite. It will help launch the plastics revolution. And, on this date in 1953,  Britain’s sweets rationing comes to an end. In place since the start of WWII, sweets rationing limited the amount of sugary goods the public could buy. The first day of unrationed sweets sees a run on toffee apples, nougat sticks, and licorice strips.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is prognosticate (verb) [prahg-NAHSS-tuh-kayt], which means to predict or foreshadow something. Prognosticate, which ultimately traces back to the Greek word prognōstikos (“knowing beforehand, prescient”), first appears in English during the 15th century. Since that time, prognosticate has been connected with things that foreshadow events to come and with people who can prophesy or predict the future by such signs.

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Monday

Here’s a thought for the day from Charlie Chaplin who along with Douglas Fairbanks and others formed United Artists today in 1919: “Life laughs at you when you are unhappy; Life smiles at you when you are happy; But life salutes you when you make other happy.”

On a lighter note: What do cake and baseball have in common? They both need a batter.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Monday, February 5th, 2024. I’m Kevin Boyle, reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And thanks for listening.
