After dealing with internet, phone and 9-1-1 service outages last Monday and Tuesday, the island experienced another set of the same outages late Thursday evening that stretched into Friday morning. Townships officials are still looking into the cause for that. FCC officials have been contacted because of continued failures by T-D-S to notify officials about 9-1-1 outages so that backup plans can be implemented, and the public advised of the issue. Last night, the S.S. Badger car ferry canceled its overnight crossings due to rough weather, with waves up to 8 feet. Bothe the 8:45 departure from Ludington and the 1:30 a.m. departure from Manitowoc were called off. The Emmet-Charlevoix County fair kicks off today at the fair grounds just south of Petoskey. You’ll find everything you’d expect at a traditional summer fair from horse riding and animal shows, to carnival rides, live music and fair food. Plus a monster truck showdown, autocross racing and an interactive firefighter show for kids. The fair runs through Saturday. |

On this day in 1939, a presidential proclamation from Franklin Delano Roosevelt designates August 19 as National Aviation Day. The day marks Orville Wright’s birthday and encourages citizens to ‘observe the day with activities that promote interest in aviation.’ Engraving via Bing.com |
Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is lethargic adjective [luh-THAHR-jik]. Lethargic describes people who feel a lack of energy or a lack of interest in doing things. It is sometimes used figuratively, as in “a sluggish and lethargic economy.” In Greek mythology, Lethe [lee-THEE] was the name of a river in the underworld that was also called “the River of Unmindfulness” or “the River of Forgetfulness.” Legend held that when someone died, they were given a drink of water from the river Lethe to forget all about their past life. Eventually this act of forgetting came to be associated with feelings of sluggishness, inactivity, or indifference. The name of the river and the word lethargic, as well as the related noun lethargy, all come from lēthē, Greek for “forgetfulness.” |
Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Monday… |
Here’s a thought for the day from President Franklin Delanor Roosevelt: “If you treat people right they will treat you right…ninety percent of the time…” On a lighter note: Why did the airplane get sent to his room? Bad altitude. |
That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Monday, August 19th, 2024. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And thanks for listening. |
