Community Calendar Report
September 27, 2024

From our Langford Family Studios on America’s Emerald Isle, this is the W-V-B-I.

First some news…

Democratic vice-presidential nominee Tim Walz is up north in Michigan to prepare for his upcoming debate. Walz, along with U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, arrived at Pellston Regional Airport on yesterday and will spend several days in Harbor Springs for a multi-day debate camp. The Emmet County Democrats expressed excitement on Facebook, calling it an honor to have them in the area. Walz is also set to attend the Michigan-Minnesota football game in Ann Arbor on Saturday. He will debate Republican nominee J-D Vance on October 1st.

The 2024 tart cherry season turned out better than expected. Despite challenges, the Cherry Industry Administrative Board reports a harvest of 261.7 million pounds, exceeding earlier projections. It’s the largest U.S. tart cherry crop since 2018. Northwest Michigan remains the nation’s top producer, with over 100 million pounds harvested, reaffirming its status as the “Cherry Capital of the World.”

The state’s archery deer hunting season opens Tuesday, October 1st, and according to a Michigan Department of Natural Resources official, deer numbers look promising in both the Northern Lower Peninsula and Eastern Upper Peninsula. Chad Fedewa, acting deer management specialist with the Michigan DNR, told the Petoskey News that last year’s mild winter helped deer survive in good condition, with strong fawn production and many twins observed. Bow hunting season runs through November 14th, with a second archery season starting December 1st. Hunters are reminded to complete the online harvest report within 72 hours using the DNR mobile app or website.

Tomorrow night at the BIC Center, singer songer writer Jim Bizer will be here to perform.  We caught up with him and asked what folks should expect to hear at the show.

(Jim Bizer :16 Q:… It’s gonna be fun.)
My concert here on the island will just be a solo show, just me and a guitar. My wife’s coming up and won’t both gonna be visiting friends that are staying here on the island. It’s gonna be fun.

There are still lots of great seats available.  And if you want to do both the C-M-U Closing Dinner and the show, you can do that.  The dinner is at 5:30 and showtime is 7:00. Tickets are off-season priced and are available at tickets dot bic center dot org.

Do you have a young singer song-writer in your house.  Or an older one?  Either way, if they want to take lessons the Tunes Music Makers are teaming with the BIC Center to offer lessons starting this coming Monday. Plus there are instruments to loan to take home to practice and explore whether you are taking lessons or not.  There’s more info on the web at tunes music makers dot org.

On this day in 1954, Comedian Steve Allen hosts the launch of TV’s first late-night talk show, ‘Tonight Starring Steve Allen.’ The innovative NBC program will go on to pioneer many late-night talk show traditions, and morph into the world’s longest-running talk fest, ‘The Tonight Show.’

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day lucid (adjective) [LOO-sid]. If something written, spoken, or otherwise communicated is described as lucid, it is very clear and easy to understand. A person described as lucid is able to think clearly. Lucid is also used to describe things that are luminous, or that are visually transparent. All of these reflect its roots in the Latin verb lucēre, meaning “to shine.”

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Friday

Here’s a thought from first Tonight Show host Steve Allen: “One of the nice things about problems is that a good many of them do not exist except in our imaginations.”

On a lighter note: Here’s the first joke Steve Allen told on the Tonight show back in 1954. “I want to give you the bad news first, folks. This show is going to go on forever.”

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Friday, September 27th, 2024. I’ll be across on Monday for a colonoscopy, and hope to be back Tuesday, but it maybe Wednesday until I’m back. I’m not planning a Katie Couric to bring you along on my adventure, but if you are past the 50 have you gone in for your adventure? I’ll look forward to being back next week. Until then, I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And thanks for listening.
