California Governor Gavin Newsom was in Michigan yesterday defending President Joe Biden. He said the 81-year-old president has the record and energy to win a second term. Speaking to Van Buren County Democrats, Newsom emphasized Biden’s achievements like low unemployment and infrastructure legislation, urging them not to fall prey to negativity. Amid concerns about Biden’s recent debate performance, Newsom reassured supporters, highlighting Biden’s determination and resilience. The governor stressed the importance of focusing on Biden’s successes and staying optimistic about the future. Independence Day activities were a hit on the Island yesterday. Many observers pegged the parade as the longest ever and the crowd to see it as the largest as well. Island businesses were busy before and after the parade and the fireworks were well enjoyed. Up on Mackinaw Island, Starline Ferries has been acquired by the Hoffman Family of Companies. Hoffman also owns Shepler’s Ferry, the island’s only other ferry service. They say no jobs will be cut at the combined companies, now branded as Mackinac Island Ferry Company. Hoffmann also owns local newspapers and is a major real estate player in the Mackinac area. In a significant historical recognition, the Mojave, a Detroit-built sailing ship that sank in Lake Michigan during an 1864 storm, has been added to the National Register of Historic Places. The three-masted Mojave, only one year old, went down in heavy weather while enroute from Chicago to Buffalo with a load of grain. At the time, a newspaper reported that the captain of another ship saw the Mojave drop into the troughs of heavy seas, become swamped, and disappear. The ship was never seen again, claiming the lives of at least five crew members, including 30-year-old Capt. Darius Nelson Malott. Their remains were not recovered. In 2016, shipwreck hunter Steve Radovan discovered the well-preserved Mojave 12 point five miles northeast of the Sheboygan, Wisconsin, Breakwater Lighthouse, partially embedded in the lakebed 295 feet below the surface. The vessel remained intact up to the main deck, with two of its three masts still standing. Photogrammetry Model of the Mojave by Zach Whitrock from wisconsinshipwrecks.org |
Finally, a reminder about fireworks on the island: Consumer grade fireworks are permitted today on your private property between 11:00 in the morning and 11:45. That’s it for the Independence Day holiday. And remember, fireworks are not permitted on the ferry or on the airlines. |

On this day in 1989 retired U-S Army Lt. Colonel Oliver North is sentenced on three felony counts, one of which is for obstruction. His three-year suspended prison sentence and $150,000 fine will be overturned a year later with the help of the American Civil Liberties Union. |
Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is castigate (verb) [KASS-tuh-gayt], which means “to criticize harshly.” Castigate has a synonym in chastise: both verbs mean “to punish or to censure (someone).” They both also happen to come from the same Latin root, the verb castīgāre, meaning “to discipline for a fault or lapse; reprove, censure.” Castīgāre is also the source of chasten, which can also mean “to discipline by punishment” but more commonly means “to subdue or make humble,” as in “chastened by my foolish error.” Castigate is the newest of the three verbs; current evidence dates it to the early 17th century, while chasten dates to the early 16th century, and chastise has been found in use as far back as the 14th. |
Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Friday… |
Here’s a thought for the day from Oliver North: “An easy life is rarely meaningful and a meaningful life rarely easy.” On a lighter note: Did you hear about the dog who wears a swimsuit? Apparently, it looks quite fetching. |
That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Friday, July 5th, 2024. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And thanks for listening. |
