At our website, we’ve tried to include everything, but if we’ve missed your event you can easily add it yourself by using the handy “Post Your Event” button in the upper right of the calendar or by sending an email with the details to calendar@wvbi.net<mailto:calendar@wvbi.net>. And, we can make it easy for your events to show up in a nice calendar on your website, too, so you only have to post them once. Your website can show only your events or those plus other categories from the calendar that you choose.

If you are packing up to head off-island after your summer here, remember that the Pantry can use many of those foodstuffs that you don’t want to carry home with you. For your convenience, there are collection baskets at the Beaver Island Christian Church, Beaver Island Community Center, Beaver Island Rural Health Center, Fresh Air, Holy Cross Church and Island Airways.

We can accept unopened, unexpired non-perishable food items. Cash donations are tax-deductible and are always appreciated as well. Checks can be made payable to the Beaver Island Christian Church, PO Box 21, Beaver Island, 49782. Please write Food Pantry on the memo line. Or you can use the Donation button at the bottom of the home page at beaverislandnews.com, Joe Moore’s News on the Net.

ON THIS DATE of October 2, 1836 – Charles Darwin returned to England after 5 years of acquiring knowledge around the world about fauna, flora, wildlife and geology. He used the information to develop his “theory of evolution” which he unveiled in his 1859 book entitled The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection.
DID YOU KNOW THAT the word ‘testify’ derived from a time when men were required to swear on their testicles?
WORD OF THE DAY: thimblerig (THIM-buh l -rig) which means a sleight-of-hand swindling game in which the operator palms a pellet or pea while appearing to cover it with one of three thimblelike cups, and then, moving the cups about, offers to bet that no one can tell under which cup the pellet or pea lies. The venerable swindle thimblerig is nowadays called the shell game (an Americanism dating from about 1890), in which walnut shells or small cups are used for the classic thimbles. The -rig of thimblerig is from the archaic noun rig “swindle, fraud.” The verb sense of rig is alive and well in the U.S. in the meaning “manipulate fraudulently” (for example, the price of precious metals). Thimblerig entered English in the early 19th century.

Traffic
Soon there will be work to upgrade Donegal Bay Road with tree removal and ditch placement to allow water run off which will help keep the road in better shape during heavy weather.
At times portions of the road will be single lane with flagmen/women slowing traffic during construction. Also, at times there will be detours from Indian Point Road to Font Lake Court, cars will be diverted around at these points and back to Donegal Bay Road at the Font Lake boat launch area.
Your patience and cooperation will be most appreciated, thank you!

… Still no delays to report on Beaver Island.

Hey, let’s be careful out there. Especially in the school zone.

To Lucas and all our listeners, when you wake each day, believe in your ability to get things done.

On a lighter note, how do you win over a chocolate lover? Keep some Twix up your sleeves!!!

That’s the WVBI Community Calendar for Monday October 2nd, 2017.

I’m Greg Doig at WVBI‚ the Voice of Beaver Island. Make today the best ever, and thank you for listening!
