Community Calendar for May 16, 2017

Posted on Posted in News Update

Today is Tuesday May 16th, 2017. I’m Greg Doig with today’s WVBI Community Calendar.

The mystery continues over the cause of the telecom outage on the island last week. Thursday morning at about 11 essentially all service went down – phones other than calls on the island, 9-1-1, the Internet and wireless services. There was sporadic service during the day until things seemed to come back for most that evening around 7:30. But, outages continued to be reported over the weekend, and the county 9-1-1 center reported that 9-1-1 wouldn’t be resolved until eight on Sunday evening. The word now is that everything is back to normal – so if you have an emergency go back to dialing 9-1-1 instead of the Health Center. W-V-B-I reached out to T-D-S headquarters in Wisconsin to find out the cause of the outage, but they have not responded.

Over at the Beaver Island Lodge there’s a special Transformational Self Love Yoga Weekend coming up. It gets started on Friday evening through Sunday morning with different styles in multiple sessions. Lodge Manager Vicky Fingeroot stopped by to tell us a little more about the event.

You can hear more about the weekend this evening after the news at 5 on Beaver Island Perspectives, and you can find all the details for the event on our website on the WVBI-BI Center Calendar.

May 26-28, 2017
The 4th annual Beaver Island Birding Festival, Warblers on the Water, will be held on May 26-28, 2017, on Beaver Island, in northern Lake Michigan.

Update 5/8/17 Pam Grassmick
Spots are still available on some of the field trips. The birding field trips are geared for new birders, advanced birders, and those who just like to go out in nature and perhaps learn something new. The field trip leaders are some of the best in Michigan and we are fortunate to have them join us over Memorial Weekend. We’re setting up transportation and will be closing the registration on May 19th. Participants will be sporting a newly designed BIBT t-shirt illustrated by Trevor Grabill. Check out the BIBT website schedule and registration: www.beaverislandbirdingtrail.org/wowschedule.html
The festivities begin on Friday night, May 26th with “Michigan Eagles and Ospreys, A Bird’s Eye View” presented by Jerry Weinrich at 5 p.m. at the Community Center. Free and appropriate for all age groups. No registration is required for presentations.
Jerry Weinrich will speak on his dream job conducting a census of the eagle and osprey populations in the Northern Lower Peninsula. As a wildlife biologist for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment for 30 years, Jerry has the distinction of coordinating the longest-running, large scale census of eagles and ospreys anywhere in the country. He has produced amazing aerial views, not only of nests with fledglings inside, but birds in flight as well. The eagle population, Weinrich says, is on the rise — up from 30 nesting pair in the Lower Peninsula when he started to 407 now. There are about 120 pair of nesting osprey, he said. Currently, Beaver Island is the only Great Lakes Island with a pair of nesting Osprey.
Weinrich hopes those who attend will walk away from the program with an appreciation of how well the eagles are doing.

We hope you join us during the Memorial Day birding festivities for free presentations at the Community Center. Bring a friend and hear from our globe-trotting birding friends share their exciting experiences birding, learn about the oldest ongoing raptor monitoring project related to Ospreys and Bald Eagles, and learn a few new songbird identification techniques. More information can be found at: www.beaverislandbirdingtrail.org/wowschedule.html. Registrations for the guided field trips are active and we encourage individuals who are interested to sign up early.
Thank you to our 2017 sponsors who are making the Beaver Island Birding Trail events possible:

While you’re at the website you can see all the great sponsors. There is also a new addition to their site. After the Saturday and Sunday morning birding field trips, Karen Whitecraft, owner of Beaver Island Massage, licensed massage therapist, will be available to help with “warbler necks”. Karen will offer on-site chair massages at the Community Center from 12:30-3:00 p.m. both days.

Did you know lion’s can’t roar until the age of 2?
Word of the day: forgettery (fer-GET-uh-ree) which means a faculty or facility for forgetting; faulty memory. Forgettery is a humorous formation based on forget and (the pronunciation of) memory. The phenomenon is very common in ordinary life, such as that panicky moment when one cannot recall the name of one’s dinner partner or where one parked the car in the mall parking lot. It is a little surprising that such a useful term entered English only in the 19th century.

Hey, let’s be careful out there. Especially in the school zone.

To Lucas and all our listeners, the struggles from adversity can often lead us to new creativity and better results, in our endeavors.

On a lighter note, smile and the world smiles with you. Fart and no one’s smiling!!!

That’s the WVBI Community Calendar for Tuesday May 16th, 2017. I’m Greg Doig at WVBI‚ the Voice of Beaver Island. Have a great day, and thank you for listening!
